Olivia Williams was the worst choice for the wife of the former UK prime minister. It cannot be true. She looked like she can be a homeless junky, who hadn't brushed her teeth or showered for ages.
In the first scene with her, I could not believe she is Mrs. Lang! She could be the maid of the house. Couldn't they find an upper-class well-groomed lady? It was also hard to believe somebody would sleep with this most unattractive butt-ugly trailor-trash-looking zombie, who has no color anywhere whatsoever!

Brilliant post and point "chicagosuspense".

I don't think she was physically ugly...more like there was an ugliness that came from inside her that was very offputting.

I didn't find her shaggable either and was rather shocked by the scene but it was because she was so nasty and obviously demented that I would normally flee from such a person.

I think the "ugly" comes from her unkempt appearance and attitude of contempt. Olivia Williams is actually extrememly appealing and attractive.

Ordinarily I think Olivia Williams is lovely but in this movie I found her almost unattractive as her personality was so abrasive & confrontative. It didn't help that they had her only dressed in black and with no make-up. I thought it was a great performance-not all actors are willing to chose parts where the character is so unlikeable. Even though her husband was probably having an affair it was hard to feel any empathy for her.

I love Olivia Williams' looks! Granted, they dressed her down for the movie, but she still looked great.

British PMs wives are never gorgeous babes. Heck just look at all the US Presidential first ladies - except Jackie Kennedy they've all been pretty average looking. I thought Olivia Williams as Ruth Lang was just about right. She was mature, mysterious, strong and quick-witted (which can be very sexy in the right combination). And as it turns out she was the real power behind Adam Lang's political success all those years. But OK we'll re-shoot the movie with some perky-titted nubile young sexbomb for the sake of our younger viewers ;-)

Hehe, what would OP write about Tilda Swinton (I adore her as actress but her looks give me creeps sometimes) who was the first choice for Ruth? And Nicholas Cage instead of Ewan ... As someone wrote:
