Way to Ruin a Great Charecter(Spoiler)

rex was by far the most interesting thing in the movie, his homophobia was just hilarious, but in the end they just decided hey let's not offend the homos or something like that and turned rex into a gay, they simply ruined most of the funny things about him during the film

...now,where was I?

reply

I think the way they portray homosexual relationships with Rex and the black dude with braids at the end was very offensive.
Plus at the very end when Ian finally gets laid, he's back being an *beep* throwing firecrackers at him.

reply

It was not a good movie to begin. Making Rex gay was just stupid. They would have been better off having him in prison for something and hes raped by a guy. It was just a stupid little twist that made a bad movie even worse.

reply

How was Rex a great character? He was by far the worst character in my opinion!!

reply

i got most of the laughs in the movie from the scenes that he was in them, like i said his homophobia was really funny(his reaction when Ian told him that he might be getting gay in the motel was just priceless) and also his extreme love for his car IMO,and the worst charecter was Lance by far

so you are saying all the people with homophobia are in fact homosexuals deep inside?! come on

wow,how was it that obvious? beacuse he was a homophobic i bet!

Lol,actually i think you are a repressed homo that you think i founded rex funny beacuse im a repressed homo! :D , jesus

why do you have to keep insulting man,we are just talking for god's sake, all i was sayin was that not ALL the homophobics are repressed homosexuals

ok i agree that when he said all the guys have fantasy about other men and they should burry them deep down was a clue

when did i say that i'm a homophobic?,just because i founded a homophobic charecter in a movie funny doesnt make me a homophobe

oh,you are gay?,then im sorry if i said anything offensive.

:D

...now,where was I?

reply

I agree with [The Earlier Post, Deleted for BS Reasons], sort of. I won't say ALL homophobes are repressed homosexuals, but I would think that most of the ones that are violently homophobic are. Why else would they be that pissed about what other people are doing in bed? I mean, where's that rage coming from?

Others, however, will call me the world's sexiest killing machine, who's fun at parties.

Rex was always going to have to get his just desserts somehow Their options were
He was gay
he gets mistaken for a gay and hit on
He ends up with the ugliest chick they could find
I thought the ending was ok but predictable

reply

Hey man. I'm gay and I wasn't offended at all by Rex's antics, etc. In fact, I found him to be the funniest of all the characters, with the Amish guy's (Seth Green) sarcasm a close second. Not all gays are thin-skinned or easily offended. And it IS true, you'll find MOST homophobes are repressed gays themselves. Because if all you have time to think or talk about is what 2 men do in the privacy of their bedrooms, something's seriously wrong with you.

"Umm yeah. There was a study in the University of Georgia. All the men that claimed they were homophobic got a hard on when they played gay porn for the test subjects while those that claimed they weren't homophobic weren't turned on by gay porn at all."

I don't think those were the results at all. I'm throwing out some numbers but I think that about 40% of homophobes were turned on and something like 20% of the non-homophobes were not. That's probably not the right numbers but its much more accurate than what you said.

I've heard of that study. However I think people may be misinterpreted the results. Erections don't necessarily mean you're attracted to someone. They are an involuntary response to stimuli that comes from fear, anger, or attraction. I bet the homophobes more so fall into the first two categories. Guys get hard-ons in strange situation. This is actually true. I have gotten boners in angering situations.

reply

queers say the darnedest things lol. all homophobes are gay? umm well that depends on what you call a homophobe. If its someone who goes out of his way to hate on queers, then yes i would agree. If you mean anybody who just gets uncomfortable in the presence overt gayness (i am like this) I guess I am a homophobe, though I don't think of myself as such. Do I think gays should live in society with us? NO. I think they should all move to san francisco or france or someplace simply because they spread their ideas to children who should not be exposed to "gay ideology" at least until they are adults. Most gays however dont respect this and love to flaunt their "differences". Ill admit maybe more butch gays dont, but the flamboyant ones sure as heck do.

That said, I have gay friends. I dont hate them, I just would never let them near my children.

seriously dude? gay ideology? who said there's an ideology. NO one CHOOSES to be gay... I mean would you choose to be an outcast? to be beaten for being different? If it was a choice at least most people wouldn't choose to be gay. Homosexuals are not trying to convert your children.
and if you won't let your gay friends near your kids... then you hate them.
you are worse than someone that openly hates gays.

oh, and btw- I'm straight and you make me ashamed of it.

"That said, I have gay friends. I dont hate them, I just would never let them near my children."

So you think only gays can be pedophiles? Interesting.

reply

On edit: I misdirected the reply; this is directed specifically to Mister "I have gay friends, but they should all be sent to San Francisco or France."

No, you don't have any gay friends. You just think you do -- or you just want everyone else to think you do, to prove what a swell guy you are, allowing gays to bask in the glow of your vastly superior existence, no matter how much you despise them.

You obviously know nothing about real gay people; your parroting of typical anti-gay talking points proves that.

Why don't you just come clean and say what you really mean -- that you think all gay people should be quarantined on an island (or worse)?

Of course, that won't fulfill your fantasy of sweeping all gays out of sight -- as long as heterosexuals like you keep having children, there will always be gay people.

May you learn to accept that not everyone is like you. May you learn to see people as people, instead of absorbing and regurgitating the spew of ignorant bigots who are even more afraid of gays than you are. May you stop hating everyone who doesn't conform to your "ideology."

And should one or more of your own children turn out to be gay, for his or her sake, may you treat him or her with more love, respect, and simple human dignity than you afford others.

Everyone was somebody's baby once. I try to keep that in mind when coming up against such unbridled bigotry (against any minority group) -- but I must admit, you don't make it easy for me to remember that.

reply

Yeah I always felt his character was ruined.

The joke about him revealing he's gay doesn't happen until the last 2 minute montage of the movie. It was unnecessary to add it in there.

I'm not at all surprised by the results of that study. A chat room I frequent has dozens of guys with "STR8" in their nick names. When they click my stats and see I am bisexual, many of them private message me and ask about oral sex. Draw your own conclusions.

When I discovered I'd been cloned, I was simply beside myself.

reply

I knew he was going to turn out gay. I told my friend. I was like "watch at the end he's gonna be gay or something." I hate how predictable movies are to me now.

He was pretending you were a woman? No, that's not gay. Totally fine."

reply

Well, since a 'homophobe' is a completely made up word, perhaps you're right.

The majority of humans believe homosexuality is a deviation and a perversion. It's not an 'irrational' belief, nor is it based in 'fear', thus it is not phobia. And the majority of people don't find it disturbing because secretly - tee hee! - they're just like you! It's because it's disturbing, counter to our dominant instincts, and disgusting.

If you want to do it, fine. But keep your fantasies about us normal people to yourself.

I think all people are a little bit gay. Especially men because they are so fascinated with butt sex (seriously a male anus is the same as a female anus so doing it with a girl is just a guy's way of experiencing man love without damaging his delicate psyche) and watching porn where the closeups are of penises and ejaculations. Plus in porn guys are always admiring each other. Porn isn't about women at all. The women are just a smokescreen.

reply

Not true on the butt sex with a woman. The anus is not a male body part, and men don't seek butt sex from women because they secretly want to be with men.

This sounds like 19th century thinking.

I always got the sense Rex was adopted.

reply

in the beginning of the movie Ian and Rex are in the car and Rex keeps questioning his brother on whether he's gay or not. when Rex starting asking his brother if he was gay he started describing all of these fantasies to him, it was almost a given that he was going to end up being gay by the end of the movie. i can't believe there were people who didn't see that coming. i don't think this movie tried to not-offend anyone.

reply

First of all, I would like to state how weird I think it is that a test that determined whether homophobes are gay or not was actually done, and how people actually care enough to look that study up, but anyway, I think I get it.

So...if someone is a racist and hates black people...then deep down they really would want to be black? If someone really doesn't like onions...then they are in fact an onion? What if, for the sake of argument, someone hates rollercoasters. Would that mean they are a rollercoaster?

Can I get away with one more of these?

So, if there was a person who is terrified of sharks, would they really want to be a shark, or would they want to eat a shark?

I would like to thank the psychologists on both sides of this argument for all the knowledge, and to get a life and enjoy the movie.

Anyways...pretty funny movie.

I think Rex was a good character, and I wish the movie would have invested more in him. Initially, I was annoyed when the scenes cut from Ian's position to Rex, all throughout the movie. It seemed like an unnecessary plot line that took away from the movie (of course, it was my first time seeing it so now I realize the plot did matter).

Even in comedy movies, I dislike comic-relief. If I'm involved in a scene, I don't like my thoughts being interrupted with a stupid little joke. I felt like Rex was somewhat of comical relief from the real story, and that frustrated me.

However, towards the end, I liked his reactions to Ian shooting Bobby Joe (I can't remember the exact name), and when Rex let Ian borrow the car to go get laid, it seems like Rex does care about Ian. Its easy to write that off as Rex's homophobia, but I would have liked a more personal view of Rex so that we could see him more as a character than a drone with two purposes-to be homophobic and to worry about his car.

Known some air is call am.

"I FELT LIKE REX WAS A COMICAL RELIEF RELIEF FROM THE REAL STORY".

A comical relief from a comedy? That is an interesting theory.

The Rex character was hilarious though, but not as funny as the the Seth Green character or the Clark Duke character.

I don't think it was to placate the gay community, I think his homophobia was a direct result of him being in the closet. From the beginning when he was talking about blowjobs I knew his character was gay, haha.
