The actor that played Lance was miscast...

When I first started watching this movie, I figured the character of Lance was just another Jonah Hill character...the chubby, geeky, obnoxious kid.

But then the movie tries to say that Lance is a "ladies man" and gets all the girls...

Not really believable.

They should have cast at least someone decent looking to play that role

You missed the whole point of the movie if that's what you're thinking. They point out multiple times that Lance may not be the best looking guy but he knows how to talk and sway chicks into his bed, and that's what's supposed to keep Ian down and make him more nerdy, because Ian is probably considered (by most) better-looking than Lance but he has no skill to get girls. It's integral to the plot. Also - out of everything in the movie, that's what you find unbelievable? Cheese and rice...

And to say Clark Duke is as unattractive and fat as Jonah Hill is like saying the 2008 Incredible Hulk movie was as bad as the 2003 Hulk.

"Oh, my God. Bear is driving! How can that be?!"

reply

I love that they got Clark Duke to play Lance. I didn't read "All The Way" so I'm not sure if the Lance character in the book was also meant to be an average joe looking pimp, but that happens sometimes. I knew a guy in high school...not the best looking, but he had so much charisma and an amazing way with words that he could get just about any girl.

I admit, I had my doubts about this movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. I don't think the story would have been as interesting if they did something predictable like get some good looking guy to play Lance. Room_On_Fire is right; it's not that it was impossible for Ian to have luck with girls, it's just that he lacked the same confidence that Lance had, who wasn't even all that good looking.

reply

Sorry, it was more than "not the best looking guy" or "average looking".

I thought he was a girl at first.

They could have gotten an average looking guy, this just wasn't believable at all.

reply

the thing is, that may fly in the real world, but High school thinking isnt like that. Even though the chubby kid may be cool and talk to all of the girls, he isnt banging any of them

While confidence is the key to almost every conversation in life, I doubted every word out of his mouth when he spouted out things like "I felt like my dick just got bar mitzvahed" like he was referring to him becoming an actual man with his first blow-job.

The main thing that holds me up from embracing this ignorant slob of a character was the fact that they are in high school. Unless it is halloween or it a costume party, which it wasn't there is no way in hell that kid doesn't become the most ostracized kid in his school for walking around being a fat, pretentious version of Hugh Hefner. No girl would have spoken to him and they probably would have broken his *beep* (Ian's) on their way out with the beer.

High school kids are vicious when it comes to people like him and there is no way he survives a moment like that especially in the modern media world. His reputation would have been destroyed during the party just by kids checking in on facebook to mock him. And no amount of confidence in the world would have saved his doughy ass when he started talking tough in county jail like the movie wanted to try and make us believe.

He was a selfish user of a friend, who ended up being a hypocrite and new nothing about the rhetoric he espoused so frequently.

Yes it was a movie, yes it was a bad B movie at that, but I absolutely hated that character to the point were it was distracting from the elementary story line. False bravado from a useless liar.

No way

His character is supposed to really good at talking to girls.

He proves you don't have to be a 10 to succeed a lot.

And I don't think anyone would want to kick his ass, because he's probably really nice to everyone. He made friends with the guy in jail.

Really Nice?

He bowed up to a man who would kill him if he fell on him. That is false bravado which gets your ass kicked in jail and in high school.

I just noted your posting name and realized you obviously live in a dream world where people can never sniff out that you are full of *beep* and you will get away with everything while in fact being useless.

This guy is never going to sway any hot chick into having sex with him. The only way he is ever getting a dime piece is if he pays for it or drugs them...and maybe if he was in a band. I know what they were trying to do with his character, but it doesn't work in the real world.

reply

He was a pick up artist. Plenty of PUAs in real life are average/ugly looking dudes, if you know how to open a conversation and say the right stuff/make the right signals you can get girls to *beep* you, picking up girls has very little to do with looks, more about confidence.

I agree with the second post. It was a total confidence thing. I know guys who are dead broke with average to less-than-average looks who have that kind of charisma and are able to talk to and get girls' phone numbers all the time. At the same time, there are good looking guys out there who can't get a date because they can't talk to girls. Girls don't work the same way guys do. You can look like Brad Pitt, drive a Porshe and be a millionaire, but if you can't talk to women, all you're gonna get are a gold-diggers and whores who would rather spend your money and cheat on you with guys who CAN talk to her the way she wants.

What Sex Drive did was take an un-macho-looking, baby-faced kid who looks like he's 15 and give him total "douchebag-bad boy" confidence which in real life would look so exaggerated and ridiculous to most women that it would still work but not to the same degree as it did in the movie. But that was the joke because people like this really exist. Sex Drive just exaggerated it. It wouldn't be as funny if he was just a run of the mill good-looking guy.

You obviously never grew up with a guy like Lance. I had a friend who was short like me, average looking but by the time he was 21 he had sex with over 100 chicks.
He just had something about his personality and that I didn't have.

That was Lance.

My take on Lance is that he was not supposed to be a realistic character. Rather, he was preternatural, he was supposed to be like the manifestation of the adult fantasy of taking what an adult knows and going back in time and re-living some situations that originally turned out regrettably humiliating; as in, "if I only knew then what I know now" kind of deal.

Lance was like Ian's adult self that came back in time to guide him like a guardian angel on his quest for Carnal Knowledge. Once the job was completed, Lance didn't return home with his friends. There was a lot of artistic license taken with Lance's character.

Lance had estrogen features and when he was first introduced in the movie I thought he was supposed to be gay.
