S1 EP3

was mixed. I thought Paddy and Matt were good in this one, but Milly and the way her character is written is a little undercooked. I don't think I'll mind Emma D'Arcy taking over. She has chops and can convey the inner better than Milly. And I think Jefferson Hall will be a good addition as well. But overall, I think the show needs more weight, like what Paddy showed tonight.

reply

Yeah, Milly Alcock is starting to show a little chink in her armor. Lol

But overall I have mixed feelings about tonight's episode. The characters are starting to develop somewhat but I'm not sure the story is really that compelling. HOTD is kind of like Game of Thrones' little brother or something along those lines. I don't know, they have some really big shoes to fill. So far, it just doesn't quite live up to the original story, characters and cast.

I'm starting to think they should have done a series based on Robert's Rebellion. That would have been quite interesting.

SPOILERS

An episode of two halves. The first half rather slow and laboured but important. The King's frustration with Rhaenyra and her discontent. Rhaenyra finishing off the boar and returning to the camp with its blood on her face for all to see. And Rhaenyra being "visited" by the White Hart in the forest and refusing to kill it.

The second half was a smallish battle but a pretty good one. But who was the mystery dragon rider ?

The writing for King Viserys and Paddy Considine's acting remain the highlights of the show. Rhaenyra is starting to look underwritten by comparison. Subtlety is one thing but there is a risk in too much stillness and too much quiet.

reply

Wasn't GOT "Spoils of War" like that? Same with "Battle of the Bastards." And to a degree "Hardhome." We get the rather slow building first half, then the explosive second half.

reply

It's been a long time since I watched Game of Thrones ( I only watched the whole thing once ) and I don't remember the episodes all that clearly. But in any case so what ?

reply

The dragon rider was Laenor, the son of Corlys. He is half Targaryen so he can ride dragons. The dragon is called seasmoke. He is the one the Strong guy was advising should marry Rhanerya.

reply

Thanks for that. I find this rather confusing so I will start a thread about it.

reply

Lame battle. Same as any generic battle, apart from the goofy tactics the moron enemies manage to fall for, and heapings of plot armor. The rest of the episode was pretty lacking as well. Dare I say, woke, even.

reply

It just didn't make any sense. It's like something out of a tabletop D&D.

reply

“Dare I say, woke, even.”

In what way did you find it woke?

reply

The constant "bash the patriarchy, I'm a woman and the men laws are against me," etc etc.

ok woman, we got it the first time, no need to repeat it every time you are on screen.

reply

Daemon's charge was at first surprising and the longer it went on the more ridiculous it became. But at least he was finally stopped in his tracks so I gave it a pass.

reply

Where was it fucking woke, because there was a couple of black men in it? A female killed a boar? So many people are obsessed by the term they no longer have a clue what it means

reply

Wow ! That's more of your impressive "intellect" on display I guess.

reply

It's woke because of the rather crude and unnecessary anti-Patriarchy messaging.
GoT had at least a dozen notable female characters and each of them encountered obstacles and frustration due to their gender. All of them acted in order to either overcome or circumvent them. They didn't walk around pouting, being resentful and selfish. She is not so much a medieval princess as a modern teenager angry her parents wouldn't buy her a new iPhone.

I'd be mad, but every time she is acting like a petulant child there is a scene in which Considine shines.
I am dreading the moment they will kill his character off.

reply

Now that you mention it, I didn't see a female kill a boar. I saw a female freak out and stab an incapacitated one repeatedly, after it was about to rip her to shreds. But to wokies, she's a total badass who beat up a boar. She wouldn't kill the "white hart" though, because she's virtuous and pure.

I dunno. "Woke" isn't any one particular thing to me, it's an atmosphere of Mary Sue bullshit. With any luck, I'm reading too much into it, and they're going a different direction than what it looks. But considering the current socioengineering trends, probably not. The earlier episodes were also woke. I just agreed with it enough to not feel like my intelligence was being insulted. I didn't think every episode was gonna be centered on female copium.

Not sure what role race has to play in the series. They are something different called a Blargaryen, and no one seems to notice or give a fuck. Essentially affirmative action hires, but they are doing a good job. Except maybe the Jada Smith kid, he was pretty corny.

reply

I think the show needs more weight

So you're pining away for the return of Samwell Tarly, in other words

reply

Not that kind of weight. Gravitas. Like the Sand Snakes.

reply

good one, mecha. lol

reply

Was the weakest episode for me. Not a lot made sense, the characters felt like they were acting differently to the characters in the first two episodes somehow.

reply

There was a three year gap between episode two and episode three.

reply

those time jumps are going to hurt the narrativel

reply

I agree.

reply

I think when the new cast members come on around episode 5, they will ease up on the time jumps. The beginning episodes are more like a prologue.

reply

I kind of agree, this was a weak episode. It did feel like a different show but yeah, the time jumps could be a reason why. The time jumps might smooth out and start to make more sense as the show progresses. I wonder if the book is this way? If anyone has read it, are there a lot of time jumps in it?

Still, I would give the first two episodes something like a 6/10 or/and 7/10. Ep3 would get a 5/10 from me.

I assume this is just the way the book is written with Daemon invincible to arrows and a guy that can defeat entire brigades of men by himself. I don't know... again, people that have read the book might need to clarify this.

However, in defense of this episode, I do want to know who the mystery dragon rider was. I would expect it to be a Targaryen. If I'm not mistaken, dragons will only let Targaryens ride them. So, with that being said, at least this part of the show was kind of interesting.

And Quasimodo, it sound like you're starting to dig the show? What changed your mind?

reply

It's no mystery Sea Snake's son

reply

I didn't like the first episode but I thought the second episode was very good. The main thing though is the writing for King Viserys and Paddy Considine has been giving a wonderful performance as the King.

The scene in episode three where Lord Lyonel Strong offers to give the King his opinion on who Rhaenyra should marry was just masterful. The King almost sneers at Lord Lyonel as he suggests that the man is going to put forward his own son and then Lord Lyonel graciously denies that and suggests that Rhaenyra should marry Laenor Velaryon for the good of the realm.

Paddy Considine as King Viserys didn't say anything but his acting was superb. He conveyed disgust at himself for doubting and belittling Lord Lyonel, loathing for his situation (he hates being the King), and sincere appreciation for Lord Lyonel's loyalty to him as he put his hand on the man's shoulder and walked past him.

reply

I will agree, those scenes have been pretty good. The acting has been one of the highlights but I'm not convinced just yet that the story is strong enough to keep up with the solid acting.

We'll see how it goes. The preview for next weeks episode actually looks pretty good but I said the same thing last week in regards to ep3. lol...

reply

I think it all depends on how long they try to spin it out for. It seems as far as the story goes all they have is the contest for the iron throne. There doesn't seem to be much else going on. So if they wrap that up in two seasons that could still be compelling. But if they try to stretch that single plot line out to four or five seasons it's going to get awfully thin.

reply

Paddy Considine stole the show in this one. I hope he gets some decent roles after his stint is over, before HOtD I only knew him from a few roles in comedies.

reply

Yes he did. If only the writing for the other main characters was even half as good as the writing for King Viserys.

reply

I'm sure the focus will shift more on other characters in later episodes. (I have not read the book!)

reply

Here's hoping. A lot will depend on the acting chops of Emma D'Arcy (older Rhaenyra) as well as the writing.

reply

True, it reminds me a little of season 2 of Rome when HBO changed the actor who played Octavian mid season.
