It's a trick (Same old Sloppy Joe, now on a silver platter)
I realized something watching the second episode. I have been amazed at the visual quality which really takes you into a film-like experience. The fight choreography and effects have also been well above what we have come to expect from the CW DC shows But what else is there? Imagine you are watching it without that visual step up. Imagine it's the flatter CW style. Take away the lighting and effects and is this really any better than season 3 or Arrow?
It reminded me a lot of that moment when Arrow had slipped from being a gritty and daring show and fell into being a soap opera with cheesy villains. Before it became complete hot garbage and still had some of the shine from its first season, and just before it became a complete Saturday morning cartoon/Days of Our Lives fusion.
We've already gotten: Eastern European organzied crime, scrappy hard question reporter, teen angst, hokey evil businessman, love triangle setups, hero questioning if he should put personal life above the exponentially greater good they do saving lives, etc. Some of these things can exist in a good show, but add them all up and it equals a CW superhero show.
Don't take my word for it. Next episode pretend the flashy cinematography isn't there and ask yourself it it's really any better than what the CW have already been serving up.
