It's loud, has beautiful scenery, everyone is very good and there is lots of gore - but it's not a sword and sandal type epic. It's one of those films I think is very good but which didn't actually engage me. If I had to categorise it I'd place it alongside Valhalla Rising and The Green Knight and in the subcategory - good but never going to watch it again.

I was about to ask how close it is to "Valhalla Rising" which is a VERY interesting film. But as you said not sure I want to watch it a second time :D
Was going to start a post here but you've basically said it: there's so much that's good about it in terms of production values and direction (couldn't quite get used to Nicole btw - should have cast a less 'Hollywood' actress IMHO) but the whole thing was strangely unengaging. I found myself getting bored during the last third and the finale was very anti-climactic.
