Vince and Ben- no stakes

In the context of the show, it seemed a bit odd that Vince and Ben needed to keep their relationship a secret. By 1990s standards, they live in possibly the most accepting town in America. Interracial relationships and friendships are extremely common in the town and they are completely accepted by everyone in it. It's hard to imagine these same people being anti-gay. The two people who knew about Vince and Ben's relationship, Jeanette and Jamie, were extremely supportive of it.

Obviously in the real Texas of the 1990s a person who was black and gay could have been a target of extreme discrimination, bullying, violence, etc. This show in no way portrayed the struggles that these people would have gone through in real life. It seems like the makers of the show wanted to have it both ways. They didn't show any of the prejudice that existed but still wanted us to somehow think Vince and Ben would have been targets of that prejudice.
