How does that make Americans "lazy"? Last time I checked, reading took up as much energy as listening to a movie does.
Stop being a ignorant prick for once in your life.
I'm an American, Einstein, and it's a fact, most people do not like reading subtitles. Think about it. If that were not true, wouldn't we be seeing a lot more foreign flicks at the cinema?
Oh, and squirt, your last sentence is a violation of the imdb.com TOS. I suggest you broaden your vocabulary...
I actually watched Quarantine with subtitles, a lot of the voices were really low, and i don't like missing what people say
Favorite Movies:
Alien
Jurassic Park
Literate people don't mind subtitles.
Also, people raised on and fond of foreign films are simply used to them.
That's really the end of the discussion.

Ok, we'll try this slowly.
One can listen and watch the main action/imagery on the screen concurrently.
One cannot read subtitles whilst looking at the main action/imagery on the screen.
Reading subtitles in anything but the slowest-paced films logically reduces viewing time & viewing pleasure.

Of course you can't read subtitles and watch the movie at the same time... if you're an idiot.
Not to mention there was a dubbed version of REC. No need for this abomination.
Hawkeye: Do you know how it feels to be unmade?
The Avengers
"Of course you can't read subtitles and watch the movie at the same time... if you're an idiot."
If you can't see that trying to read subtitles detracts from seeing detail and action on a screen, especially things that are happening fast, often in the dark, etc, then you are the idiot.
Remakes of films into English are going to happen. Whining about it won't change that.
A case in point is Let The Right One In and Let Me In. I own and appreciate both for what they are.

Yeah most American's are lazy, can you remind me what country takes a 2 hour nap during the middle of the day? Spain? Spain is full of the laziest people on the planet. What have they contributed to the world other than a *beep* version of this movie?
shareSpain is full of the laziest people on the planet. What have they contributed to the world other than a *beep* version of this movie?
Except spain didn't discover the Americas.
Also Portugese is more common than Spanish in South America.
And no, I'm not taking sides, I think you both sound equally juvenile and stupid.
Yes they did.
And Spanish is way more common than Portuguese in SA. Portuguese is only spoken in Brazil. All the other countries speak SPANISH.
Hawkeye: Do you know how it feels to be unmade?
The Avengers
I completely disagree with this and that Spain hasn't contributed anything to the world...but this made me laugh hahah
-- I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
2 hours long daily nap? Well, that might happen... in some kind of parallel universe. But not in Spain :) (Tip: I'm spanish)
Regarding the subtitles thingy... we don't like them in Spain neither (and that makes most of us being awful with english)
You mean other than taking a chance on some quack italian with a crazy idea of hitting the east indies by sailing west? and discovering the HUGEST real estate in World History? Umm.. which sort of led to people coming HERE? Let's remember before Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of SPAIN, helped fund Christoforo Colombo... HERE was not even known to exist so... anything that America has done, is indirectly a result of Spain's actions.
Also... they settled.. places you may have heard of... Like " San Antonio, Tejas," "Las Vegas, Nevada".."San Diego, California" " San Francisco, California... California...New Orleans was Spanish before it was French and . " La Ciudad Bendita de La Virgen Maria madre De Dioz Y Los Angeles, California"
The irony of the last city is.... it's where Movies are made :-) And here they are... in Spain.... making movies too :-)
And people who make ad hominem attacks are jerks.
shareNot true. Like me many Americans enjoyed this film and would also like to see a more "Americanized" and higher budget film than Rec.
Signature.
That's why I enjoyed both movies.
People just can't understand that they don't have to watch it if they don't want to. They need to stop parading around like they are better than everyone else because they aren't too lazy to read subtitles.
By the way. [Rec] is easily my favorite foreign horror film.

lol Aww why'd you have to ruin it and tell the topic maker the name of the movie it was remade from, because im almost certain he didnt know it!
I'm going to talk like you guys do for the rest of this post...
Did you know almost ALL movies are remakes... Do your homework, check out imdb a little better that you would know that... There nothing wrong with remake... and in case you were wondering.. 90% of American have never heard of Rec, and for it to make it in america with english sub, it has to be a really artsy fartsy style movie.. Which this isnt...so its actually perfect type of movie for remake.. "Why remade it?" Thats why...
oh and by the way.. dubbed in any language is about the worst thing you can do to a movie.. unless its kungfu or godzilla.... so no.. we americans wont be watching it in dubbed... subtitles give a movie an educated look to it... and we are smart veiwers... The american viewers you sir are referring to must all by 13... lol
Why the F would I watch an entire movie in a language I do not understand and read subtitles. I HATE subtitles.
We are sooo fapping right now
I haven't seen "Rec" but I love "Quarantine." I don't like subtitled films because the constant shifting my eyes to the bottom of the screen and reading the words disrupts the flow of the film for me. The only way I watch subtitled films without being distracted is on the computer since it's a much smaller area to watch. And dubbing is also a pain to watch because I'm fixated on the peoples' lips not matching the words being "spoken."
And if the OP wants to see a stupit [sic] remake, try watching the "Psycho" redo with Vince Vaughn.
LOL Psycho remake was really really bad. Bloody awful.
share"LOL Psycho remake was really really bad. Bloody awful."
It was about 10 times better than this horrible piece of *beep* This is one of the few films I've seen that I really struggled to finish.
Completely unoriginal, the acting was painful, and the camcorder thing was unbelievably annoying.
If you love this film, I hate you. That's how much I disliked it.

I almost wish I could bring her back so I could feel what it's like to kill her again

Because it could be a good movie and it would be best if you saw it, even by having to read subs to understand it...just saying. For example, tell me you didn't like [Rec] for the sole reason of not being in english. I saw both and i think that [Rec] is easily better.
shareRec and Quarantine are pretty close until you get to the end. Quarantine blames a cult creating some kind of super rabies virus, while Rec goes with demonic possession.
Rec 2 was released this year and continues on with the demonic possession story, in fact its the main theme (without giving much away). Because of the dumbed down ending in Quarantine if they want to make a Quarantine 2 following the Rec 2 chain of events they'll either have to butcher Quarantine's ending and excuse it, or ruin Rec 2s script.
Either way, I agree that the remake is "stupit" but for different reasons. If it had have been a direct copy I would have been fine, a lot of people don't like watching subtitled movies.
[deleted]
I think you missed my point, or I spat it out wrong. A virus makes sense in the context of the first movie, i.e. there's no signs of demonic possession just a bunch of zombie like people.
My 'dumb' rant was copying an entire movie then switching the ending when it would have been obvious any continuation of the story would go more into the possession part.
Case in point, 'Rec 2', entirely based around demonic possession. The main character is a priest. The "zombies" are willed to talk when the priest says his voodoo chant.
So yes, "viral infection" makes more sense in the context of the first movie given what we know, and is more believable. But demonic possession was the original story, and they should have stuck with it so 'Quarantine 2' if they decide to make it won't be a complete hack.
I know that post is kind of old but I understand what your saying. I think one good reason for them to change the ending was for people who had already seen Rec and they wanted to make it at least a little more than a copy. They also may have thought that Rec 2 was never going to be made. Idk that's just my opinion.
Signature.
Let me get this straight. You consider the viral explanation stupid, but demonic possession is a completely acceptable explanation to you?
I hate having to keep telling people this.
Quarantine isn't necessarily a remake.
They were working on quarantine the same time they were working on REC. The quarantine crew didn't even get a chance to see REC until halfway through production of quarantine. It was eerie how both teams had done so many similar things.
So, if it makes you feel better, you can dismiss this film based on it being a "remake" but you would be ignorant by doing so.
Thank you for brining logic into the conversation.

Here's something I don't understand:
People are unhappy if a remake is UNLIKE the original
People are unhappy if a remake is EXACTLY like the original
WHEN ARE YOU HAPPY!
Now, the point of a remake IS to be like the original. That's why it's a remake!
It's unbelieveable stupid that you can't spell stupid goddamnitt
Simpsons haters go to HELL!
I've seen both versions and I thought the remake was superior to the original - mainly due to the better acting in it. You're supposed to forget you are watching a film and 'buy' the whole 'this is a documentary' thing. In order to do that, the acting has to be seamless. You have to forget you're watching actors. I just couldn't get into the original because the acting was a little hokey but I totally bought the remake.
share[deleted]
Yeah, I cant beleive you thought the acting in Quarantine was even slightly believable.... Rec was very realistic in their reactions and dealing with the situation where as in Quarantine the acting was so wooden and like they were reading off a script it was untrue! and the girl got so annoying and OTT near the end it annoyed me.
shareI watched both versions, and I happen to like them both. Of course, Spanish and Spanish-speaking people will more than likely prefer the original because it's Spanish. Of course, 'Quarantine' is the same as the original. That's the point of a remake. If it wasn't quite the same, many people will moan about the fact that it's "too different" from the original. I think the acting was good on both sides (with a slight preference going to the original). It may be true that most of the US audience have never heard of REC (for distribution reasons), which means that a remake was almost inevitable due to the success of REC. Acting in a documentary-style movie is not that easy, I suppose. The actors have to pretend they aren't actors, but instead regular people who are caught off guard by the presence of a TV crew with a camera making them feel like they are actors or like they have to act.

"I just want to be inspired."
Now you know why they wouldn't let the critics see it.
well said mate
shareStupid isn't the word to describe this god forsaken movie
shareYeah. I'm surprised it got a 6.1 rating.
"Sometimes it's right to do the wrong thing, and right now is one of those times."
Great film, this is what horror movies should be these days, more suspense, more of a realistic approach, and more of being kept in the dark, in more ways than one. Because I don't know about most of you, but blood and gore just doesn't cut it with me anymore.
i LOVED [rec]and i thought quarantine was a nice solid effort (with an equally smoking hot female lead) i think they chose to remake it because it's such an awesome story and concept that since a shocking amount of people automatically switch off when it comes to subtitles, even they deserve to experience.
i don't understand how people can hate quarantine but like [rec] because it's a SHOT-FOR-SHOT remake for christ sake. the differences between the two are minimal, people can't even complain about the acting because only people who have spent time living in both english speaking and spanish communities would be able to tell if there is any over-acting or if it's at about the same level.
"is that a chinese baby?"
"sure is, japanese to be specific"

Thank you so much for that sensible post. The movies are 90% the same, and anyone who tries claiming that Quarantine is horrible, while [Rec] is great, is just being ridiculous. I prefer [Rec] slightly more, (only because the ending was more frightening and the actress who played the reporter was more beautiful and less annoying that Jennifer Carpenter), but Quarantine was what made me want to watch [Rec] in the first place. If people are totally against the idea of remakes, how hard is it to just not watch them? Several times great foreign and older films have been brought to my attention because of remakes, and I'm thankful for that. Good or bad, a remake doesn't diminish the original film. At the very least, it brings extra money and attention to the original creators.

Damnit! I'm halfway through downloading REC and I only just came to this board because I saw Quarantine recently and I had no idea Qurantine was a remake of REC. I'm kind of surprised and kind of not that alot of people hate Quarantine so much, surprised because I thought it was a solid film and one of the best horror movies in the last 5 years but not surprised in that IMDB is such a harsh place and every single movie will have a bunch of people that hate it without offering much if any real reason.
I thought Jennifer Carpenter was really good in this and very different from Deb on Dexter who I'm so used to watching, none of Deb's characteristics came through in her character in this which impressed me. Also people keep whining and complaining that she's to pannicky or screamed too much which I think is comes down to how used to people are with female characters in a situation like this just whimpering softly in the dark and screaming only once in a while. I thought JC did a much more realistic depiction of someone in a situation like that where you're hyperventilating and hysterical because of what's going on around you. People had the same complaints about Jennifer Carpenter in season 4 of Dexter breaking down crying hysterically which so many people said was massively overacting whereas I thought it was refrehingly realistic compared to most female characters in movies that would rather cry and whimper softly like a little girl.
The only other complaints I've read on this board are the shaky cam which is ridiculous as you should've known the movie was shot like that and not even bothered watching in the first place and the other reason being that not everything's explained and wrapped up in a neat little package with a bow which so many uninteligent film goers demand.
So those are the 3 main complaints I've read that people have with this film: Jennifer Carpenter, shakey cam and lack of explination, well none of those things bothered me in the least but rather enhanced my enjoyment of this movie all the more.
As I type, REC is almost downloaded and I'm going to watch it soon and from the way people have been saying that REC is so much better than Qurantine I'm expecting it to blow me away and become my next favourite horror movie, seriously if it's THAT good and so many people consider this SO bad then how could I not possibly love REC to death when I see it? I'll be back later today to give my opinion on that film and you people have given me sky high hopes so it better not dissapoint!
The hate is pretty simple really.
If you we're a big fan of Star Wars, would you respect a frame for frame German remake of it? No matter how well produced it was, you'd find it pretty insulting and ridiculous.
I think the same thing goes with Quarantine in most of the cases. I didn't think it was that bad, pretty decent actually. But knowing it's a remake of an already great movie, I understand the hate.
The irony of someone so dumb as to not know how to spell, and I'm assuming even pronounce, the word "stupid" calling something stupid makes my head explode... thank you for the awesome laugh.
