Whaaaa! WWhaaaaa! Whaaaaa!!!!!

That is all I'm hearing from this board.

I went into this movie with almost no frame of reference. My girlfriend was a HUGE fan of the original and she had me watch it once before we went to see the new one. In enjoyed the original very much. It had everything a good 80's movie should have, it was cheest, it was campy, Ren was cool as can be, Willard was hilarious, it has the unique character of a damsel who you are almost supposed to hate. It was terrific.

That being said. The remake: ALSO TERRIFIC. No, its not set in 1984, no it doesnt have all of the original 80's music (which by the way, is not the greatest music in the first place). Its a modern retelling. And what I dont think a lot of the haters realize is that in many scenes, it is a shot-for-shot remake.

Portions of dilalouge are identical. Set designs are modern, but are full of homages. The dancing is amazing (and in many ways an improvement). Many points in the story are improved upon.

This is a GREAT movie. And the only people who are bitching and making the rating go down (by the way, you should ONLY rate a movie if you've actually seen it...that'd be the honest thing to do) are the people who are so far up the other movie's ass that they are too afraid to let the next generation enjoy it.

Who knows? Maybe this remake will inspire people of a younger generation to watch the original. And instead of being pretentious just because you grew up with something, you should give it a try. I'd love to see something from my childhood retold in a modern setting.

POINT IS. This movie is actually good and I'm of the opinion that anyone who hasnt actually seen it should pull their panties out and quit whining.

And if you have seen it and hate it, than its possible to tell how you dislike something with intelligence...who knew right?

Go see Footloose! It's great!

Lol this post made me laugh...
Older generations HAVE always and WILL always hate the current generation. How many of you grew up with baby boomer parents in the 90's who wouldn't let go of the 60's and 70's? Even people my age (early 20's) love to talk about how awesome growing up in the 90's was compared to the 2000s... and I'm sure it's been that way for decades....

A lot of 80s movies weren't all that great.. you're just nostalgic about being younger. Hating on the current generation won't change that. Some silly movie remakes aren't going to define our generation, just look what else is going on in the world right now.

However, lately it seems like the media has been trying too hard to bring back 80's and 90's pop culture. Probably because people spend so much time b*tching about how much they miss their youth!!! Maybe I'll feel the same when they remake The OC and Titanic in 20 years, who knows

That's painting with a big brush... and some people readily admit many of those movies weren't "great". But they had SOME quality. And the remakes, usually, don't. They're just..... bad.

My comment to you is, don't trow away an opinion about remakes, or a comment about concerns about the future, simply by sweeping generalities. Sometimes, especially with remakes, there's a REASON for the opinions.

Hating on the current generation won't change that.

"Hating" is not what most of us are doing. (The slag of "hating ON", notwithstanding).

But, again, best to weigh each concern and criticism on its own merit. Just as it's not fair to dismiss the entire young generation, it's not fair to dismiss every criticism of it, entirely, either.

Agreed, about the remakes.

But it's the "what's going on in the world right now" which is the greatest concern, and a REAL concern. Especially in regards to education, literacy, future problems, politics, values, entertainment, etc. I'm very concerned for what is shaping up, overall.

Entertainment and politics... I see Ellsworth Toohey is winning...

I'm sorry, but your post is too old for me to read. You need to essentially write the same thing again, but change a few of the words and put the paragraph breaks in different places so that us 2012'ers don't have to deal with your outdated writing...

Off the Footloose topic a bit but.....The younger generation has to be kind of pissed that "The Amazing Spiderman" coming out summer 2012 is a reboot of the recent 2003.

Let's be real here. It's not like the old Footloose is an untouchable masterpiece. Fun eighties kitsch with a great soundtrack? Sure. A classic? Hardly.

Frankly, I think some people just like to complain. Remakes have been around since the silent era; they're nothing new and not really worth complaining about. Even if a remake is absolutely horrible, it's not like the original ceases to exist. How often do you think about the Fame remake from a few years back? Just ignore the new version.

Anyway, I just saw Footloose today and found it surprisingly good. I don't know if I'd say it was better than the original but I did appreciate the more serious and down-to-earth approach to the material. Certainly I found the characters more believable. The only real drawbacks were Dennis Quaid's limp performance (he's no John Lithgow) and weak music.

Hmph. The point is if they are going to set it in a different time and yadda yadda, they should just give it a different title. Movies rip off previous storylines all the time. That's what makes it fall into a genre. There's no need to tarnish a film's classic charm just so the new generation can appreciate it. The point is these big production agencies are just getting too lazy to come up with new titles. NO FILM IS SACRED!

Personally....

I'm not an '80s kid. I was born in '90. But I pretty much grew up knowing and watching all these '80s movies. And Footloose was one of them. I loved it, thought it was great, seen it too many times to count, etc. So I heard the remake was coming out and I was a little iffy, as I'd normally be when there are remakes being made of something I like. But, I have to say, I loved the remake. Honestly, it was amazing. I left the theater feeling great! IMO, they did an awesome job remaking it. Hell, I'm pretty much obsessed with the remake. And, of course, the original will reign supreme but like I said, the remake was amazing. Everything was done well and I think it did the original justice.

But again, it's my opinion. And I think that's what it boils down to. Everyone is gonna have different opinions on it. Some will think the remake sucked and some will think it's awesome. I'm a fan of the original who loves the remake, what can I say?

I wouldn't say it was terrific, I thought it was good but the acting wasn't great to me by the two leads (Kenny's boston accent made me laugh all the time). The hip hop music and hip hop dancing (also the grinding/sexual moves which I wouldn't consider dancing) during the first half annoyed me. There are enough dance movies out there now with that type of dancing and music in it. I know they did that for the young people out there to make it more modern but not every young person out there likes that kind of music or dancing....
