Who do you think was better and why? I liked Lori Singer more. There was something about her that made me believe she was made to play Ariel. She gave a great performance. I also particularly like her a lot more in the scene when Ren and Ariel first kiss. That scene was done way better in the original, in my opinion.
shareAbsolutely Lori Singer. Julian Hough, while being only 22 or 23 at this filming just looked and talked liked someone much older. She did not even convince me as a teenager at all and certainly did not pull off the edgy rebellious teenage character like Lori Singer did.
And, while on the subject of age, the guy who played Chuck Cranston looked WAY too old to be dating a teenager still in high school too. He looked every bit his age of 28 or so at the time this movie was released. Neither of those characters worked for me as played by these two in this version.
Julianne by a mile. At least she was hot and had a nice set of tits. Lori Singer looked like she dropped a couple of tic tacs down her shirt.

Lori BY FAR! I thought she made the character intriguing and sympathetic - she was messed up and dangerous and acted out, but Lori managed to portray this in an unselfconscious way, whereas Julianne made the character seem like she was choosing to act out specifically to get attention from boys, and it came across as a bit arrogant, desperate and embarrassing. She made me cringe a lot, I felt a lot of dislike for her and didn't enjoy her scenes, whereas Lori was quite captivating. And also Lori was way more beautiful - the new girl just had a lot of makeup on.
shareI like them both but I like Lori more. I agree with whoever said Lori did more of the misunderstood frustrated thing while Julianne did the bratty rebellious thing. Both fit the theme but I just liked Lori better.

I have to say that I liked Julianne much better. I was never a fan of Lori and thought she was over the top with her acting in the original. I just didn't see the chemistry between her and Kevin.
The one character that I thought was hands down a huge improvement in the new version, was the uncle. I liked that story change much better than the original.
