Lori Singer vs Julianne Hough

Who do you think was better and why? I liked Lori Singer more. There was something about her that made me believe she was made to play Ariel. She gave a great performance. I also particularly like her a lot more in the scene when Ren and Ariel first kiss. That scene was done way better in the original, in my opinion.

I liked Lori Singer better as well. Maybe it's because I liked the original better, although I really enjoyed this one as well. For me, Lori made the character more real. Julianne hasn't had much acting experience, and for me, she's just a pretty face. She did a decent job in the movie, but watching Lori on screen as Ariel was just wonderful.

Julianne is not just a "pretty face." She was cast because she's an amazing dancer, something Lori Singer lacked. In the original when they went to that club that Willard got punched out at, she looked like a goof.

I second and third both notions. Lori Singer was just more charming and had more of a believeable edge. I bought her teenage angst and rebellion. Hough was just too "cute". It was if her character was pretending to be rebellious in a cutesy sort of way.

reply

Agree, Lori had an edge to her. She did a great job and was totally believable.

Lori hands down, think she was cuter too. Lori played Ariel more as I'm really not that cute, Julianne is more I'm cute and I know it.

I thought the actress for the 2011 version was better. The 1984 one just came across as too bishy, the newer one, despite that characteristic trait, showed some sincerity underneath & overall seemed to be a better actress.

But as for the leads, I thought Bacon was much better than the newer guy. The newer guy was a good dancer but he was very flat & had no screen presence. While the NEW Willard I found to be the star in the new Footloose.

Thats the way she was suppose to be. This new comer sounds like a Chip Monk...really I cant believe any person would like the newer version. Movies like this should never be remaked. I have serious issues with it.

Lori Singer was more vulnerable under the tough exterior.

Best point made in this thread.

Nor sure if that's Lori's acting but I'd think more due to direction.

Julianne H is one of the only good things about the new version though.

Lori Singer was hands down the better choice. This whole remake was a waste of film. Lori had much more of an edge that made her believable as a rebel. I've already forgotten what the guy who played Ren looked like - totally forgettable. But it did accomplish one thing - made me want to go back and re-watch the original about a dozen times!

reply

Lori Singer was much better. Julianne Hough seemed like the only time she knew how to act was when she was copying the lines from the original...she just mimicked what Lori did. When she was faced with saying newly written lines, she seemed to not know what to do. It's like she was almost looking off camera waiting for someone to tell her what to do. LOL

only an idiot would thank that lori singer is a good actor

Then again - she had Rebellious Preacher's Kid down...

reply

I've never seen her in anything else, but she's awesome in "Footloose." She's totally believable as a preacher's rebellious daughter. Julianne was okay, but like most people in the remake, not as good as the actor who played the same character in the original. And that's not surprising for a remake that has so little originality. When a remake rips off the original so much, the remake will probably be at best a second rate version of the original.

I think the remake works for this generation. The music the dancing the "sex" it works for them. I bet most of the positive reviews come from a younger audience. So we can't say it's a waste of film cause it works for them.

lori singer is a horrible actor and is ugly as well

reply

Yet, she was way more believable and rebellious than Julianne..- Lori wins for me..

reply

No contest. LORI!!

Julianne played Ariel like a bratty wanna be bad girl and Lori played her like a rebellious misunderstood girl with serious issues looking for a way out.

If any good came out of remaking Footloose it's that it got a whole new generation to want to see the original. It got more people interested in the original. I wish they would re-release the original in theaters one of these days. I'd go see it. Hey, the 30th anniversary is coming up. Let's hope they re-release it.
