Depressing and bizarre

In the first 15 minutes we are reminded of growing old, death, and losing the ones we love. For the rest of the movie we have a house floating on balloons travelling to South America, and talking dogs that fly airplanes, including one who wants someone to be his master and prisoner at the same time.

I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the movie, it's just those are the two words that most echo my feelings about it.

You have to pay attention to the pictures at the end while the credits play. The ending is as happy and heartwarming as the beginning was sad! Carl, Russell, and Doug go on to have a lot of fun together.

The opening montage was exceedingly cloying and overdone. There was no trademark Pixar wit or charm to it - instead just hand-wringing and emotional manipulation. The animators were clearly fishing for tears, but all they got out of me was an eye roll.

The rest of the movie was predictably goofy, with a little bit of forced moralizing for the dullards in the audience... oh, and talking dogs for the kids.

Then again, Pixar only ever made one great movie and they've been coasting on it for years. Once you've watched one of their films you've seen them all.

The end was depressing too. In initially trying to honor Ellie's memory, Carl ended up losing every memento of her. They had no children so he couldn't ask anyone else for their copies of pictures, etc. He went on to make new memories with Russell and Dug, of course, but the whole letting go thing was too much.

Yeah. The first twelve or so minutes are infamously heartbreaking. Weird way to start a cartoon but the rest of it was cute and fun.
