This is what gets 12 Oscar nominations nowadays?
Besides some well done cinematography this movie sucked! Just a boring movie about miserable people living in the early 1900's. Zzzzzzzzz

shareWell it was a deconstruction of one of the last bastions of American glory: the white cowboy.
Now inundated with the taint of homosexuality and portrayed through the lens of "toxic" masculinity, it was everything Hollywood craves. As the movie showcases, openly gay murderers triumph in the end.
I noticed this Netflix movie had all these nominations so I wanted to check it out... bad idea. I noticed it was another gay cowboy movie. The masculine cowboy who is a closeted homosexual... barf! The internet is great since I can look up the plot and all the spoilers. I decided not to watch it since I grew up watching all those cool Spaghetti westerns. I don't believe the cowboys were gay in the Netflix black cowboy film The Harder They Fall.

It’s just a point of view. Being “gay” has existed forever. You’ve got a million movies in the history of cinema where no one is gay (and every character suits your your preference).
I’m just saying that not everyone agrees with your preferences, and I don’t see anything wrong with seeing a different point of view every once in a while.
I mean, I can love a western like “Tombstone” for the badassary that it is, and can also appreciate a movie like “Brokeback Mountain”for its POV and filmmaking artistry.
I thought it was strange for Hollywood to nominate a Western with a white male lead.
Try as they might, it will take more than that film to kill good Westerns or successfully change the narrative.
The Searchers (56) is in Sight and Sounds top ten.
I haven't bothered looking, but did Old Henry get nominated for anything? Old Henry was a far superior Western and captured much of the same mood as The Power of the Dog, but without any of the homosexual subversion; they also gave us a proper and thrilling shootout in the end instead of a homoerotic "roping" scene.
shareI'm not sure, I will have to check that one out. But you are spot on with your comments.
Hollywood has always been a dynamo for social engineering.
"Toxic masculinity" is on the Hollywoods radar and will try to use social engineering to change it.
'Should' what is known as toxic masculinity be changed in your opinion?
shareI believe that the term has come into play because men and women are working more closely together in the workplace, and women are reaching higher levels of power in the office than ever before. Men and women, for the most part have different styles of operation in the office. Women tend to be more cognizant of the feelings of others, while males tend to be focused on a goal and have no problem hashing out issues without regards to the feelings of others with fierce debate.
I believe the social engineering experiment is just to try and teach men the advanced skill of tactfulness while in leadership positions.
Of course the term "toxic" masculinity can easily be confused with just plain masculine behavior, and therein lies the rub.
There are many conservative thinkers that believe that the term "toxic" masculinity is just a figleaf for liberals war on masculine behavior of any sort.
I can see your point, thanks for being so conscientious in your reply. I really appreciate it! Could you give me an example of a masculine behavior that liberals are against?
shareYou got to wonder what's so important about "deconstructing" America's only really durable mythology.
Just kidding...
We all know why they're doing it.
White tears are sooooo umm umm good!
shareSo what should have gotten showered with nominations? Enlighten us.
shareDon't know yet, haven't seen them all yet. I'm sorry, did I rip on your new favorite movie?
shareThere probably tons of movies that could be nominated. But only thing that get nominated is pretentious artsy fartsy depressing bullshit. That nobody will remember in 10 years. It use to be your movie didn't need to be depressing and boring to win an Oscar. Remember when Forrest Gump and Return of the King won.
shareSo you prefer populist Hollywood blockbusters for simple minded folks?
shareNo I prefer entertaining movies. Memorable ones that stick with you years to come. Outstanding acting performances and set pieces. Engaging plots and well crafted cinematography. Other than some good cinematography, this movie had none of that, and yet it's up for 12 Academy Awards.
shareNot for nothing, but how many of those kind of movies have been released recently?
It’s been at least a few years since there’s been an important movie that really speaks to a wider audience.
I loved “Parasite”, but I get that a general American audience (unfortunately) doesn’t want to deal with subtitles. I loved “Birdman”, but I get that it’s too artsy-fartsy for most. “No County for Old Men” is the last movie that won that I could kinda say that deserved it … and more than a few people will agree with me….and that was over a decade ago.
There just aren’t enough directors making the next “Shawshank Redemption” - an Oscar-worthy movie that didn’t win any Oscars…because Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction were its competitors.
Parasite was great. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri was too
shareI don't think people remember No Country For Old Men much. People remember There Will Be Blood more and it lost to No Country. Go figure.
Typical for this Oscar art-film trash is a metascore of 89 but an Imdb rating of 6.9.
Licorice Pizza has half the spread, and Encanto is almost the same.
It was a bit slow but the story was interesting…Imagine you were the toughest rooting-rooting Cowboy on the ranch and you had a secret that shamed you into being a bully and a jackass all the time because you couldn’t deal with it…you love the land, the cowhands and the dusty trail…but you are not what you want to be…
I was in the mood for a Western one night when I watched this one and I did NOT get what I expected and yet I liked the story and thought the cast was great
You are correct, the cinematography was terrific👍
