I burst into laughter many times while watching this film...But the scene that sent me falling off the chair was the one where his wife walks up to him and tells him she wants a divorce...The conversation and also his reaction as well as his expressions....Brilliant, just brilliant...
The revered old Rabbi telling the kid about Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane like it was the secret of life. The son hesitating to pay the drug selling kid the twenty he owes him because he doesn't know if the bully will survive the oncoming tornado. Great movie.
For me it was two scenes: the first one being where Larry races home from work after receiving a phone call from his son. He's barely in the front door when he's confronted with his wife sobbing, his son bitching about the television reception, & his daughter casually telling him that Sy was killed in a car accident. I love his reaction of "What?, WHAT!?" as spittle comes flying out of his mouth. He's in utter shock & all his kids care about are the tv & going out.
And for whatever reason the scene where a super stoned Danny looks over at his equally super stoned friend cracked me up. The look on his friend's face with his eyeballs popping out of his head was hilarious. It was like they were both simultaneously having their own "David After Dentist" moment.
"He's a *beep*" "Fagel or *****?" "They're both *beep*!"
Also I laugh when Larry and Judeth go to meet Sy at the diner, and Judeth takes a seat on Sy's side of the table. She drives there with Larry and then sits on the other side of the table. I don't know why, it's just funny how badly the wife and Sy are *beep* on this poor guy. it's just so wrong.
Yeah, that scene in the diner, when Sy holds Larry's hand and says: "You know Larry sometimes I find, that if I count to 10. One, Two, Three, Four,... Or silently." - and then continues counting silently to himself, the look on his face and moving his lips... it cracked me up!
Another scene was when Larry was seated in Mrs.Samsky's couch and she surprises him when she comes in thru the other doorway. Something about that scene cracks me up...
"Well, Danny goes to Hebrew school, Sarah doesn't have time, she mostly... washes her hair. Apparently there are several steps involved, but you don't have to tell Marshak that. Just tell him I need help. Please? I need *help*. "
The phone call from Columbia House. As a teenager in the '90s, I too ignored the agreement I made with Columbia House after receiving the initial nearly-free albums, and they also contacted my dad after awhile.
The movie wasn't a comedy, and many people who expected one were disappointed. But the Coen Brothers are able to make me laugh even in their most serious films. In a way, that's part of life.
As for my answer to the OP's question: all of the above.
Definitely the look on Danny's friend's face when they were stoned at the Bar Mitzvah. Everyone around him is leaning forward, completely sober, watching the ceremony with seriousness, joy, and curiosity...and then this kid is leaning back, shrunken in his seat, frozen, eyes so wide open it almost looked like special effects, STONED OUT OF HIS MIND, and he knows it. I laughed so hard at that scene I had to go back and watch it a second time. It gets funnier every time I watch it.
When get chased home by that random person? I think it might have been fagel idk but it just made me laugh so much. Its like he was being chase home by some random creeper all the time and he wouldnt tell any one
"The Rabbi is busy." "He doesn't look busy!!!" "He's thinking."
Another scene I thought was pretty funny was Clive suggesting a "secret" test - hush hush!
And finally. "Sometimes it helps when I count to ten, Larry...One...two..three...four five...six...silent" *grabs his hand* Talk about an awkward situation-Judith instantly breaking the silence when he was finished couldn't have been timed better.
i can't believe no one mentioned the dream with sy banging his head against the chalkboard yelling "i seriously *beep* your wife". i had to pause the movie to compose myself.
remember kids if the doorknob is hot jump out the *beep* window
