So Mare obviously eyes Billy’s beer bottle when he leaves from eating pizza at the house. She’s obviously thinking DNA test from that. Guess we are to assume she decided against it because it’s never mentioned. She also wouldn’t have though John was going to kill Billy on the fishing excursion.
Loved Mare…but how senseless was she to go offer her condolences to her partner’s mother. Guess only the viewers were privy to how much she bad mouthed Mare to her son every scene we saw her in. Knew that little social call wasn’t turning out well. But she was quite upset about it and felt responsible.

Yeah the Beer bottle is one of many things that are brought to our attentions and then DROPPED and not mentioned again. Where DYLAN was that night when Brianna found him missing is another. Who the Peeping Tom was is still another.

And you're also right about how Mare should have first called Colin's Mom to ASK her if it would be ok to come over to her place (which would also have given his Mom the chance to tell Mare she didn't want to see her.)

But guess the SLAP was more DRAMATIC than Mare having Manners enough to get permission before she pays his Mother a visit???

So, this is interesting, because I thought exactly the same thing when I first saw it- that she was eyeing the beer bottle because she was thinking of testing it for DNA.

I re-watched when I showed the whole series to a friend the other day, and I got an entirely different read on that moment. Billy says he has to go and she looks at the beer- the beer is completely full. I now think she was eyeing the beer because it was weird that he had just opened a beer and then quickly decided to leave. Which was obviously because he was uncomfortable with the discussion of Erin coming to live with him.

She wasn't thinking about DNA, she just quickly noticed how he wanted a beer (he obviously drinks a lot) and didn't take a sip after they started talking about Erin staying with him for a while.

It wasn't due to DNA, but that Billy suddenly decided to leave (a barely tasted beer) because of what had been said.

It was the honest though brave thing to do to offer condolences. It wasn't actually Mare's fault after all.
