Why did the black guy take so long to turn?

He sat in the safe bunker for a while. He hiked for some distance. He got the plane etc. Seemed like he took a while to turn

But Batista turned in a few minutes after getting bitten

Basically, with zombies in film/TV, despite setting numerous precedents in terms of turning time, people only turn when the lazy plot writers need them to.
