Mm, Hitler's voice here sounds ethereal, almost disembodied...

Notice how every time Hitler speaks here, his voice doesn't really seem to come from the actor, but feels like it comes from everywhere, like a narrator? And also, unlike his public speech voice, sounds very relaxed, calmed, even reasonable?

Gives him an extra creepy quality.

And in fact, it does sound closely to Hitler's REAL normal voice (not his public speech voice):

Eerie, isn't it? I liked it.

David Bamber's version of Hitler in this movie made all of the actors very nervous.

Oh good, then it ain't just me.

I'm sure Stalin was similar in private, and Lenin and Mao and other equal monsters...

I don't recall ever hearing about Stalin throwing tantrums like Hitler. He was always cold and deliberate with his speech, but it was naturally of a higher pitch. If you didn't already know he was a mass murderer you might actually laugh hearing his voice.

"I don't recall ever hearing about Stalin throwing tantrums like Hitler."

That's because he died in power and victory, hence NOBODY dared to report such a thing.

You really think people in absolute power don't eventually get carried away and lose it when they don't get their way? Stalin in fact (according to Khrushchev) lost it and locked himself in his room for days after Germany invaded and inflicted huge damage to the grounded Soviet air force.

reply

I'm sure he did from time to time, and after his death we finally started hearing about his personal life and the way he conducted himself. Those folks said when Germany invaded he did indeed lock himself away, but it was in quiet denial rather than ranting and raving like Hitler was famous for.

Hitlers chilling voice and the way he was filmed it was almost like he was an otherworldly demonic entity .. and he had almost black eyes.. dolls eyes.. the devils eyes (like that line from Jaws - probably intentional as Singers production company is named after Jaws)

Also after the blast the way we're not entirely sure if he's dead or not leant an almost supernatural element to him

Its like the film was saying forget all the Jasons, Michaels, Freddys, Hannibals, Terminators etc this is the REAL bogeyman to end all boegymen!

reply

Also the line he says '' The Valkyrie; handmaidens of the gods, choosing who will live and who will die, sparing the most heroic from an agonizing death.''

Conjures imagery of the end of Raiders

reply

You can not say the same about the German version.

There is only one known recording of Hitler's normal speaking voice, a secret tape made of his negotiations with the Finnish high command. He sounds rather similar to the actor in the film and I suspect this is what it was based on.

reply

Very good performance by David Bamber.
