I just watched the episode and I was puzzled.

the real reason is that apparently michael pitt had problems behind the scenes. they rebounded nicely and the show turned out well, but it's obvious that at first there was way more planned for Jimmy

Why did he kill Jimmy? Because he is a rat-faced piece of *beep* who cares for no one but himself. Also because the writers tried to imitate GOT by killing a main character for shock value and as a result, lost a great deal of fans. ( Jimmy was a fan favorite ).
