Where were the Twin Towers?

The movie begins in New York in 2000, but there was not even a single shot of The Twin Towers. I think the WTC buildings were a big part of the New York landscape prior to 9/11.

Its still an emotional topic for people considering how many ppl died......... Its a happy disney movie , no need to bring up feelings of sadness or hate toward the people who did it.

reply

Still, if the story takes place in 2000, you expect the Twin Towers to be there. It just made the prologue feel rushed, like it was put together in a hurry. I understand it's still an emotional topic, but stating the story takes place in 2000, and then removing the twin towers from a wide shot of NYC, I think that's even more cruel.

It's like trying to erase the WTC from our collective memory.

reply

Oh, how about putting the Twin Towers in as a kind of memorial of 9/11? It is true it is a very emotional topic. That is the reason the towers should have been put in in the first place, to memorialize those who lost their lives on 9/11. It only makes sense, after all. Leaving them out is as if we have forgotten 9/11 altogether. Putting the towers in films, on the other hand, will allow us to memorialize 9/11 when we watch those films. Emotion is not necessarily a bad thing to have. We are humans, after all.

^^ Agreed, every time you look at the skyline now you can just feel the missing presence of the towers.

As soon as I saw New York City 2000, I immediately started looking for the towers too. They had lots of nice skyline shots and could have easily inserted the towers for continuity. If they weren't going to add them, they shouldn't have told us the year. Just start the movie and then when Dave is grown up, have it say "10 years later" or something. I really enjoyed the movie, but was disappointed that they dropped the ball on this one issue.

BTW, take a look at my site and you'll see there are plenty of movies made since 9/11 that have digitally inserted the towers in them when they portray the past.

Yes, more films have easily inserted them. Thanks for pointing that out!!
It was a total goof on the part of the filmmakers. It's got nothing to do with what some others said above, especially poster #2.
We all were looking since it was 2000 in that scene and they had to know people would say "Hey, where are the twin towers?"

Goof indeed!

nearly every movie mention to have the towers in them in the years SINCE their distruction fall under three categories...

1. the movie was already filmed and it would cost too too much to redo those scenes... this includes animated films that take years to develope.

2. were tributes and movies based on the terrorist attack that bought the towers down...

3. had news articles or slight story lines involving the towers...

4. movies based MANY years before the towers fell, ie. in the '60s, '70s and etc...

whether it was a goof or because they thought it best to leave it out, we might not ever know... it was only one year before they fell... idk... i'm more bothered by you people complaining about it than me not see them in the movie... they still bring up bad memories for me... grr... whatever... bye

A movie set in the 1960's shouldn't have the Towers. They weren't built till 1970.

I didn't see the movie, but the Statue of Liberty isn't something that's always seen, unless you're in Jersey looking north east, or in lower manhattan looking south west. Most shots of the skyline are too far north to see the statue. The twin towers, I could see them from 20 miles away on a clear day

The 80's wanted so badly to be the future. 2010 is the future.

reply

should the camera shot have shown the towers is the real question? It didnt seem to bother Nicholas Cage talking about the twin towers in the film Knowing, he was exec producer on this movie.

Yes.

I don't think a lot of people even noticed that...I did but it did not bother me much, beside I did not feel like thinking about something so depressing when I was about to watch a film about Magic lol

Bottom line: It was a major goof to not add them back in digitally. The instant they said "NYC 2000" I (along with tons of others thought "Ok, it's prior to 2001 obviously. We should see the towers" ... and then nothing!

Total goof. It's got nothing to do with "leaving them out on purpose". That's just silly. All that would do is leave us all discussing it like we are now, pointing out that's it's a goof!

Friends reruns: All those quick shots of NYC from 1994-2001 feature the towers.

The Simpsons: Homer vs NYC (1997) has half the episode centered around Homer going up and down the towers looking for a bathroom.

Looking back, it's a time to remember them and not block it all out.

Heck, even the movie "Miracle" put them back in and made positive news by doing so.

Oh come on now, you very well know that they could have been deliberately written out because of political correctness.

It could have made an interesting story device -- I suppose the storefront of the arcane arcade (not the right name) changed because Nick didn't pay the rent, but with the towers crashing down in that neighborhood, many storefronts might have changed quite a bit.

The Statue of Liberty IS shown specifically, albeit briefly, at the beginning. The teacher points it out at the start of the field trip.
