Hey guys. Well, I'm new to the Black Swan board, and probably this subject has been discussed a few times now, but I wasn't here nor did I find the threads, and since it's something that confused me since I saw the movie 2 years ago, I'll have to ask.
Did Nina REALLY have sex with Nina or was it an illusion/nightmare? I mean, in the movie, I don't think Aronofsky made it clear whether that happened or not, and I'm sure that was his intention. I mean, Lily states that Nina was dreaming, but that came off as on purpose to make Nina confuse, but I'd like to know what you guys think about this.
It was difficult to tell so I know what you mean, but I think by the end it seems clear that she didn't. When real-life Lily visits her she seemed genuinely pleased for Nina so I don't think she would have callously lied to her. The only thing was that Lily did seem fairly surprised to see her and not just in "I heard you were ill" kind of way.
I think the last time Nina saw Lily that night was when she left the club and Lily followed her out. My theory is that she went back inside while Nina got in the cab. Or she may not have seen Lily since being on the dance floor with her. I do believe they were together up until the point where she had her drugged drink.
I was curious when the reality part stopped. I also thought it was odd how when lily was at the door she would walk away fast enough for Nina's mother to say no one was there.
Makes no difference if it as reality or a dream.Fantasies oftentell more truths than reality. The meaning of that scene is she was repeatedly sexually seduced my her mother for years.
MDMA itself doesn't cause hallucinations. Not unless the pill Lily gave her was MDMA mixed with some kind of LSD derivative. But if you're a schizophrenic (like Nina) on MDMA, then I suppose anything is possible.
I'll take Lily's word it was pure. It floods the brain with serotonin and dopamine. Schizophrenics have imbalances of both; excess serotonin can cause hallucinations, erratic behavior, aggression, inability to be rational. Dopamine will do worse. And we add alcohol on top. Fricking powder keg!
A person hates you because they either wanna be you, see you as a threat, or hate themself
I often feel it's silly to wonder if something "actually happened" or not when it's a scene in a movie. In situations like this one, it's likely that the writer or director didn't even make a decision as to whether it was real or not, on purpose. The point is to make the audience as confused as the character in the movie, and make them feel what the character supposedly feels.
That said, Lily was obviously an evil biznatch, trying to do whatever she could to make sure Nina wouldn't be able to perform in the production, because she wanted the part. She drugged her, purposely kept her out as late as possible the night before opening, etc. And she even screamed at her when she saw her in the building. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE SICK!" She was angry as hell that Nina showed up despite her best efforts to prevent her from doing so.
On a related note, real or not, I believe the sex is what led Nina to do what the a-hole producer had been telling her the whole time, "lose yourself".
From what I gather, Lily never went back to the apartment with her. If you watch the scene closely, Erica never actually interacts with Lily. Lily mostly stays behind Nina and cheers her on when she talks to her mother. So after Nina 'wakes up' with the guy in the bathroom, you could assume that Lily either put her in a cab home or was just not there at all and only in Nina's imagination
I don't think Lily was really manipulative at all. I think she was just a little awkward in a new place and trying to make friends. Lily seems to show actual concern for Nina, talking to Tomas about going too hard on her and going to see her after their argument. The going out part seemed to be that Lily realised Nina was under the thumb of her controlling mother and wanted to do something nice for a girl she felt sorry for. And getting annoyed when Nina showed up to the performance...well the girl had just thought that she would be dancing the lead role of Swan Lake in the first ever performance since Beth's retirement. It's understandable that she'd be a bit annoyed that this chance had suddenly been yanked away from her. And she does apologise to Nina after the Black Swan performance
I still think that there is a CHANCE they did actually sleep together.
However, as someone else pointed out, Lily WAS genuinely nice to Nina after the performance; so why would she have maliciously lied to her about the sex?
But then on the other hand, Lily DID keep Nina out late the night before and drug her. And also, she seems completely furious on the night of the show when Lily turns up ( "She wasn't supposed to be here!") so she clearly wanted the part badly.
It's also possible that any reference to Lily wanting the part badly is purely imagined as well. I'm sure many of us have felt like people were angry when they really weren't. It could just be Nina's paranoia acting up.
I thought the sex scene was obviously imaginary, I mean think about it, how could she enter Nina's house with her scary mom, let alone be in her room with the door locked. She didn't seem particularly bicurious either.
The beauty of the film is it gives you plenty of leeway in determining what's real and not real.
