Good endings/Bad endings

Make your lists. Feel free to add why. Could be helpful to future writers...

BAD ENDINGS
Harry Potter (stupid camping trip, final year should have been set at Hogwarts, Snape storyline wasted)
The Natural (disgraceful change to 'feel good' ending to satisfy Redford's ego)
Sherlock (ironically, because they catered to the fans!)

GOOD ENDINGS
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane (killer twist)
Shallow Grave (the money shot!!!!!)
The Sixth Sense (killer twist)
The Usual Suspects (killer twist)
M*A*S*H* (compelling first hour story, nice second hour character wrap-ups, BRILLIANT goodbye from BJ)
Newhart (THAT is how you use a dream to end it)

I agree with your list and I would add Game of Thrones to the Bad side.

I never knew they changed the ending of The Natural.

It was ironic because Redford was bashing Reagan for the very same behavior at the time. The Malamud novel is actually a tragedy. I finished it in the Boston Public Library and sprawled prostrate on a couch for several minutes because I was so traumatized by it.

Now I'm curious...

Some one here actually watches MASH. Come on that show dosen't have nearly enough beheadings and floppy penis's to be considered good.

reply

WatchED. Backed in the day. It was one of the first 'series finale' major television events. But not the first. Maybe The Fugitive takes that honor.

BAD ENDINGS
Game of Thrones
True Blood
Everybody Hates Chris
Seinfeld
Jericho

GOOD ENDINGS
Lost
The Lord of the Rings
The Sopranos
Spartacus

"Malamud novel is tragedy"
-----------------
It wasn't Redford's ego it's a studio saying they aren't putting millions into a script with the protagonist striking out. The public wouldn't understand that Roy Hobbs struck out honorably.

Similar with Tom Cruise in "Risky business" using the alternative ending not the real one which is available on-line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KnW9_viA7Q

What I read at the time was that it was Redford's choice. I was shocked because he'd just criticized the Reagan feel-good stuff...

reply

Lost in good endings, nice trolling.
