Precious' mom was severly mentally ill.

Was Precious' mom supposed to have bipolar disorder or something like that? There was something severely wrong with her, and she reminds me of a lot of bipolar patients I've seen over the years. That scene of her dancing in a bathing suit while we watching the 100,000 dollar pyramid disturbed me, as a mental health professional, much more than any of the other scenes in this movie. This woman was seriously demented and needed help herself. She threw a newborn baby on the ground!

Also, people on this board are too PC. What... is wrong with you guys? lol

The dancing bothered you the most? Are you serious?

This is hilarious. I wondered the same thing.

What exactly is with the "she's a horrid person, so she must have a specific mental illness" posts? How about her perversion? What's the name of that "illness"?

reply

I would define it as incest.

reply

I don't really understand why the dancing in a bathing suit was the most disturbing part to you, would you mind explaining?

reply

I thought Mary was mentally ill too but I would have thought she was a borderline personality rather than bipolar.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

I absolutely detested Precious' mother. To completely deny her daughter's victimisation and accuse Precious of manipulating her father into rape was horrific.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

reply

she had a complete self-centered POV.

I thought that scene was completely unrealistic, although maybe it brought a sense of finality to the film.

Precious mother was miserable/bitter and denial.

reply

Narcissistic Personality Disorder, definitely. Only has concerns for her own wants and needs, zero empathy, manipulates and controls others at any cost, refuses any responsibility and expects special accommodations and attention (think of the welfare checks!). This is actually really common in real life. I have a mom with NPD characteristics and connected with so many others who've dealt with the same, it's scary. And there's no help for people who have it 'cause they NEVER admit they have a problem. It's ALWAYS somebody else's fault. The only way to deal with them is cut them off. Precious made the right choice!

reply

Sadly you can't always cut these people off.

Some of us have to deal with them all the time!

If you're a mental health professional I find it a little strange that you associate these things with bipolar.

Maybe someone during a full blown manic episode, but she would be full of remorse and regret.

Most bipolar people don't abuse their kids. Most bipolar people aren't "seriously demented".

You don't seem professional at all.
