Cool movie, stop hatin'
It's not called On Golden Pond, it's called The Thing. It's just a fantasy ( ha, Aldo Nova reference ). It's not winning Oscars for best drama. Just get a buzz and enjoy. Geeze.

shareI don't think that polite criticism is "hating." And remember that a lot of the posters here are fans of the original and came into the viewing with an open mind. And while rarely recognized, don't forget that Sigourney Weaver was nominated for her role in Aliens. There is such a thing as a bad scifi movie. In this case, I wouldn't call it bad so much as lazy. Too much reliance on CGI and not enough building of suspense. I have it on my computer and just rewatched some scenes, and there's just so much that bothers me about it, especially the lead. I got no problems with her being a girl, but McReady at least had some leadership skills. Winstead is too subtle. And most scifi fans are intelligent. You can make up crazy stuff and entire worlds but make it make sense. Having Kate, with the flame thrower, chase after the thing after it slowly drags Adam along with it and then just stop even as three more steps would have incinerated the creature and then wait a second before giving chase...these are the things that bug scifi fans. It's not the quality in terms of "give us Gorilla's in the Mist" so much as "don't make your characters act stupid and change the way of things to fit your timeline." I'd give more examples, but it's 2 am, and my brain is fried.
I did enjoy watching it. However, I have to say that it's not as good as the first one, even with its superior special effects.
I liked it. My only complaint would be that the end scene in the space ship was pretty cheesy. Other than that I fully enjoyed the movie, and the tie in to the Carpenter movie was great.
shareNot all that bad. I felt that the CGI was no worse than most CGI, but at times it was actually good, like when Henrik gets absorbed under the shack. Later on, they overexposed the thing a little. A bit of trimming to some of lingering shots wouldn't have hurt. The way that the effects were chopped up and mixed with the men's reactions on the original movie worked really well and would have done the job here too.
The muddle in the climax that arose from the ditching of the other aliens on the ship concept is fairly apparent. But you can't be too harsh on it for that, considering the way the full Blairthing had to be chopped out of the original. A nice conclusion to Kate and Carter's story(or was it?) but the idea of Lars just disappearing until the credits and linking the film to the 82 Thing was rather uninspired. The fact that it is the next morning when that chopper turned up means that Kate would have had plenty of time to return to base, but no(?)
What is really annoying though is that few of the characters really made an impression. Even Kate. This was certainly not the case in 1982. And the tension and conflict they tried to build up between Kate and the main Norwegian guy was totally unnecessary.

yeah sure Hitler, we aren't allowed an opinion.
shareI liked it a lot...to the point that every saturday I used to watch it, while every sunday I watched the 1982 classic...give it a try, as I said, is a very good one.
shareI enjoyed this prequel. Would/can you answer 2 questions? What happens to the girl? How did the radio operator(the frozen one) get his throat sliced?
shareDefinitely a cool movie which get's too much hate.
