Miramax plans to castrate another fine movie

'Tropa de Elite' undergoes changes for USA release

"Tropa de Elite" will undergo an adaptation for its release in the USA. Rather than having captain Nascimento, Wagner Moura's character, as the protagonist, the american version will center on the idealist policeman Mathias, played by André Ramiro.

"'Tropa de Elite' will be told in the USA under Mathias' innocent point of view", according to Harvey Weinstein, Miramax's owner, to the "Persona" section of the "O Estado de São Paulo" newspaper.

To the head honcho of the company that will distribute "Tropa" in the USA, José Padilha's movie has a solid chance to get the Academy Award for best foreign language movie in 2008.

Also according to the newspaper, the focus of the trailers and press material will be on Mathias (Ramiro).

Well if what they want is to appeal to the US public, they should replace the drug dealers with terrorists, replace capt nascimento with bruce willis, make the main character invulnerable and having infinite ammo, and name the bad guy "ben ladun". Instant box office hit.

But really, if this is true... so sad.

Well, as long as all versions are in the DVD afterwards, which is apparently the standard for foreign films, that's OK.

This isn't the fault of Americans, it is the the fault of Miramax, specifically Harvey Weisenstein, there is a reason why he is nicknamed "Scissorhands" after all.

Tropa de Elite was released theatricaly in France last wek, through the Weinstein compagny. The narration is still the one of the captain, not of André.

Yeah. I just saw the US DVD today, released by the Weinstein Company, and it is the captain's narration.

This is the first time I have had a chance to see the film though, so I can't speak on any changes from the original release.

Friggin' great movie.
