Shame on Steve Martin. Many stand up comics consider Steve Martin to be a genius and their insperation, but after these 2 movies, and other choices he's made, Steve Martin is about making money and no longer interested in a quality product.
As talented as Steve Martin might have been, he couldnt touch Peter Sellers in his prime. Not even close.
I thought he was great in "The Jerk", and in Planes Trains, Auto's, I can't think of much else other then his SNL 70's appearences (Wild and Crazy guy, was really funny). That was all 20 to 30 years ago, lol! Luckily I have been smart enough to avoid paying money to have my time wasted by his lame sell out crap.
He has, for a long time, been one of the funniest comedians on the planet.
He's not funny in these movies, but watch something better, like 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' to see when he still had a soul and comedy in his heart, and I DARE you to not laugh when he performs on screen, just try it. If you still don't find him funny, the problem is with you, and it's a deep-seated psychological issue that can't be fixed, solved or cured.
" Steve as low as Chevy Chase? No one can be as bad as Chevy Chase."
Will you stop insulting great comedians that have proven to be more successful than you?
(Success doesn't mean money in this case)
Chevy Chase is HILARIOUS in many movies, but he became a cringy sellout, like pretty much all great comedians seem to. Maybe they just burn their flame so brightly, it dies out so then they have nothing left but greed.
I agree with you all seriously. He's all about making the money anymore. The film I really enjoyed him in was Bowfinger and after that...just horrible. I loved him in The Jerk, The Lonely Guy, Parenthood, Father of the Bride etc...pure classic characters. Steve what happened man, let Peter Sellers forever rest in is grave.
Agreed with all of you, Steve Martin sucks as Clouseau!! He ruined the character, whilst Peter Sellers made Clouseau's character come to life, and even though Peter Sellers died almost 21 years ago, he will always be the one and only Clouseau! I bet he'd be ashamed if he saw what Steve Martin did to his character.
Steve Martin, hang your head in shame!!
Harry: He took our picture! Marv: How did my hair look? Home Alone 2.. lol!
Who's the audience for this? Judging from the number of times Martin falls from a great height in the trailer, I'd say young children. But then again, Martin's too old to appeal to kids, and adults would find this nauseating. May as well tag it "Steve Martin, in Home Alone 5!" First film benefited from a couple of holiday weekends three years ago. For some reason, they're moving it up a couple of weeks compared to the Feb. release date in '06.
Man with Two Brains, All of Me, Three Amigos, Planes, Trains..., Roxanne, Parenthood, L.A. Story...
Some of you have already hit on the TWO saddest aspects of this. Not only does this foul up (for too many people) a proper appreciation of the signature interpretation of the classic Clouseau character by Peter Sellers, but this is also one more nail in the coffin of Steve Martin's once legendary reputation as a comedian. In fact, the way Martin has lowered his status as a comedian with this garbage just to be richer than he already was is almost tragic.
I'm holding out hope that it's not about Martin's personal paycheck and about getting enough box office dollars next to his name to do something small and personal again at a studio and be given some creative freedom.
He's done enough of these low denominator family things to establish some credit again, so hopefully there'll be a return to form in the future. Lost it or not, I'd like to think he's savvy enough to play the game since he's still got the potential in there to make some kind of legit comeback. At least based on the fact that he can still write sharp prose.
The really sad part is how much potential there was in Martin reviving The Pink Panther and then to see it utterly wasted. However, Edwards and Sellers sold the character out before Sellers even died - they only did the last few to make hits and build enough cache to get some freedom. And Edwards continued to violate the corpse of the series up into the 90s to build up bankability.
As for what audience this is for? The same audience that makes Paul Blart Mall Cop # 1 at the box office two weeks in a row.
Also, he's one of the wealthiest and most famous people on the planet, and you think he needs to "BE GIVEN" creative freedom?
If some college students can make a successful comedy with nothing but a hand-cranked camera and their mom's oven, why would someone with tens of millions of dollars need to be _GIVEN_ 'creative freedom'? ANYONE can have creative freedom (within reason) - you don't need to be GIVEN that by any studio.
Steven is so rich, he can easily form his own studio, buy a studio, build a whole mansion that's nothing but a damn studio, he can afford to buy cameras, hire actors, write scripts, there's _NOTHING_ stopping him from having 100% creative freedom!
He just doesn't CARE to make anything creative. I have creative freedom with no money, I have a pen and paper, I have a laptop I can use to make music with free software with my self-sampled mouth-made instrus edited with some other free software.
I can make pixel art and animations and comics with my old Amiga, why would someone as rich as Steven need to be _G_I_V_E_N_!?! any kind of 'creative freedom'?! In your opinion, SUPER RICH PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE CREATIVE FREEDOM without some pre-established studio GIVING it to them?! HUH?! WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING?!
Nothing is limiting Steven but Steven himself. HE needs to give himself creative freedom, not any god damn studio!
To add - would ANY studio really put their foot down against someone this famous that's GUARANTEED to bring them big bucks? WHAT DO THEY CARE what the script says as long as they get the money? I mean, would someone really NOT let Steven do what the damn ever he WANTS to do in a movie, if Steven has good, comedic ideas?
Do you really think Steven and his lawyers couldn't NEGOTIATE a contract that gives him creative freedom?
Sure? I read somewhere, that "A Shot in the Dark" was originally planned as a far more serious movie, but Sellers said he would only act in it, when it was changed to a Clouseau-movie... Blake Edwards did, and so the Clouseau-series was born.
"What happened mother? Why did we all run?" "Man... was in the forest."
Sellers DIDN'T HATE the 'The Pink Panther' movies. He couldn't have been so brilliant in something he hated, and also, he wouldn't have CUSTOMIZED the movies to his comedy style if he had hated them. Maybe he hated them BEFORE he customized them, but come on.
I can understand him hating the VERY FIRST movie, as I am pretty sure I have never tried to watch a more boring movie. It's almost miraculous as to how horrible and boring that 'movie' is.
