Peter Sellers is rolling over in his grave

Shame on Steve Martin. Many stand up comics consider Steve Martin to be a genius and their insperation, but after these 2 movies, and other choices he's made, Steve Martin is about making money and no longer interested in a quality product.

As talented as Steve Martin might have been, he couldnt touch Peter Sellers in his prime. Not even close.

Steve Martin, is not funny anymore.

I think what most stood out for me from the previous Pink panther Series is the chemistry between Herbert Lom and Peter Sellers, the hate of Dreyfuss for Clauseau was hilarious. I think where they went wrong with this series is that they are aiming it squarely at kids and instead of making it believable, they rather overdo a joke (clauseau flying through the franch skyline after the man hits the breaks). Peter Sellers' version basically had plot outline and the rest was spontanious on Sellers part and rarely exagerated (later films in the series unfortuantely fell in the same trap as this series). I think that a third film might not be far off, unfortunately and yes i think they will reuse the hamburger gag.

I think the big difference is that Sellers, as soon as the cameras rolled, was a consumate professional and worked hard at even the characters he came to hate playing, as with Clouseau - he may have hated Blake Edwards as the years went by, he may have hated the Panther series, but you would never know it watching the films, he put everyting he had into them.

Martin however puts no effort in unless he loves the material - and he rarely chooses material he loves anymore, only taking the easy paycheck options these days. His best performances have come in his least successful films - Leap of Faith and LA Story were towering performances, and neither set the box office alight. It seems the last movie he made he worked hard on the character and the performance was Shopgirl, and that was because it was his pet project.

The Sellers Pink Panther movies were superb, and are beloved for a reason - Sellers put his all into them even if he hated the work, and they filled the movies with great, great actors who all acted their hearts out. Lom as Dreyfuss is the best example - the guy was a genius who out-acted Sellers in every scene they shared, they had terrific chemistry and made every scene a delight by bouncing off each others performances. Kwouk also was pitch perfect. Lets not forget the amazing work of Niven, Plummer, Rossiter, Vernon et al. All of them worked their socks off to create memorable characters. I've made the mistake of watching both these Martin travesties and none of that is present in any of the actors involved, they're all phoning it in and the result is the excrement flung at the screen. There's no love or joy evident anywhere.

Unfortunately Peter Sellers has been spinning since 1983 with Ted Wass, 1993 with Roberto Benigni, and now with Steve Martin. Peter Sellers was in the process of doing "Romance of the Pink Panther" when he suddenly passed away. The series should have been laid to rest with the legendary Sellers but the vultures in Hollywood first tried to capitalize on his death with "Trail" & "Curse" which in my opinion was a bizzare attempt to salvage the franchise like they did with Bruce Lee in "Game of Death". They then came out with "Son of the Pink Panther" with Roberto Benigni who was supposed to be the son of Clousea & Maria Gambrelli from "A Shot In The Dark". I dont think anybody believed that spastic yard troll came out of Elke Sommer. Now they made two films with Steve Martin desecrating the Clouseau character and an ensemble cast helping to carry the franchise into the toilet. I feel sorry for the kids who have never known the comedy of Peter Sellers and think this steaming turd of a film is a Pink Panther movie.

Seller's isn't spinning, he's been having a few dozen more heart attacks!

WoW

I read all comments and not one liked the movie. I am the only one, so that means I will receive some nasty responses.

Look, I think Pink Panther one was dreadful, I totally agree with you guys about that one.

HOWEVER!!...

This second one was awsome. I mean the characters, the plot, everything was done with respect to the old series. Take Steve Martin who many say that he cared only for money and not the character?! Did you see how much physical effort he put into this movie? Like the scene with him dancing the Flamenco in the restaurant? Come on guys, the man is almost 65 years old!!

And as for the annoying Kevin Kline, I am glad he was replaced by the far superior John Cleese. I fehlt that he was perfect for the role. So much that he reminded me of Basil of "Fawlty Towers" and that is a good thing.

Hmpf, now I will be probably attacked by fans of that series. But please, before you do, watch PP2 first OK?

Watch "A Shot in the Dark". At the beginning of the movie, Dreyfuss is the man. He is the respected commissioner, a man of responsiblity, with even a mistress on the side. Then watch his descent into madness and psychpathy, driven by Peter Sellers. You can feel the hate. You can smell how every blunder Clousseau makes destroys Dreyfuss' sanity a little more. And it is absolutely hillarious.

This, and the dynamic between Sellers and all the other actors was gold. It's madness to pay someone to attack you at any time without warning, so that you are ready for it when it happens. It is ridiculous. But in Clousseau's world it is perfectly natural. It is brilliant. There is no care, no subtlety with the performances, writing or plot in this movie. Lame jokes, hammy performances and a script written by chained chimpanzees. A disgrace. 975 people gave this 10/10. I need to find 975 bullets.

I halfway agree. I thought the first movie was hysterical! My family quotes it all the time. I knew the second couldn't live up to the first, but I didn't expect it to be awful - which it was.

Steve Martin's PP movies are very hit and miss. Sometimes he nails it and sometimes the sequences are funny, but only sometimes. With Peter Sellers the laughs were continuous. But then we're talking about the combined genius of Peter Sellers and Blake Edwards after all. Steve Martin has been screchingly funny in films like "My Blue Heaven". To see him as Clouseau is not only painful, but sad.

Sellers was a chameleon, and Martin is always the Stupid Guy. Of course you can't compare the two.

I don't like the label "genius", but I think Sellers might have been just that.

Just saw this film for the second time in April 2013 and found it a lot funnier and more enjoyable; at least a 7 out of 10. If Peter Sellers is rolling over in his grave it's likely from a few of the hilarious scenes in PP2!

Anything can be photographed now.
