4.8 is far too low. Sure there could have been some parts of the movie that may have been improved and it feels a little rushed, but this was quite a good movie.
Are people rating it low because they were expecting a slasher flick and got more of a psychological thriller instead?
ive learned 1 thing on imdb, rating doesnt mean ****, i mean when this movie gets 5 and a movie like 300 gets 8, u know that theres something wrong, its not the 1st time and it wont be the last :)
I think it has something do do with people not liking things they don't understand. For example this movie is complicated and contains a lot of symbolism, which I love but many will not, and again with 300 amazingly arty and lots of symbolism. People don't like what they don't understand. The comment for this film is annoying, he hates it because he doesn't understand it.
I completely understand this movie. It has "The Matrix" syndrome. What you do is take a bunch of vaguely religious and metaphysical imagery and reference, blend them together, throw them against the wall and see what sticks, season with a pinch of poorly thought out plot, and voila.
There was no suspense in this movie whatsoever, what's frigtening about this movie is that I was swindled out of 15.99 by intriguing cover art.
Lets be generous and assume that the writers knew that the archetypical fear of body dismemberment and helplessness alone wasn't going to make for a suspenseful movie. Especially considering there are several movies in recent memory that have done it worlds better. Even if we believe that the whole purpose of giving the flashbacks out of order was to slowly establish the fact that he "was worried about" all the thing that were happening in his coma, which it failed to do, the movie still falls flat.
Every fear that they bothered to establish was too shallow to get your ankles wet in, assuming another fear didn't contradict it. Ok, I guess he's afraid he and his wife are incapable of satisfying each other which is why she cheats and is unable to see the pain he is in at the end... Yawn.
Is he afraid that his middle class life is empty, as evidenced by what his son and brother say? If thats the case then why is he so petrified of his children choosing another path... Seen all that before.
Or is he afraid that his position in society is dependant on the exploitation of minorities as we keep seeing in the hospital? Or is Mandingo the personification of his caucasion genetic inferiority? Shallow, and frankly offensive. And again, if thats the case, WTF is Nurse slutbag doing there offsetting his oh so crippling fear of Mandingo? What happened to my Whoppers?
Oh wait! I got it. Mandingo is a defensive mechanism that protects George from all of the dangerous revelations above, just like how your body wakes you up from bad dreams, which is why he keeps hopping on the bed like in the portrait in the bathroom of the whole "Witch riding" phenomenon. Got it.
And this movie is vaguely Judeo-Christian so the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil thats above their bed reappers on Mandingo and the nurse because they're irrespectively representative of Good and Evil, and being a both metaphysically and psychologically fallen man George has the ability to make the free will and makes the wrong decision and kills himself. How tragic.
#1 If you pick your movies based on cover art, you hardly should be critiqueing them. The issues you mention are hardly the key ones of the film. Your best comparision is then the Matrix films...jump on the bandwagon from years ago and think no one will remember. The religion and politics IMHO have been introduced more by the viewers looking to rationalize the film rather than it's intent as written.
#2 How was the nurse a slut? She was simply a nurse portrayed with above average looks and figure. Add in the fact that she is intelligent and ambitious and the slut title goes even further out the window. Oh, wait...she actually does have sex with the guy weeks after knowing him and after them both 'discovering' his wife's infidelity together. Is this just lashing out at a level of woman you cannot find for yourself?
The reason for the low rating was because the movie sucked. It was a poor story that drug on an hour too long. It would have been better off as a 30 minute short film. The script needs a serious overhaul.
Very few of the people who have given low scores have been able to say anything beyond "this sucked ass!" or *beep* this *beep* The few who HAVE said anything else, tend to be these people who are quite high on themselves and seem to believe that they're one of the few people who are 'above' movies like this.
Hey what a coincidence! We have both of those kinds of people in this VERY TOPIC. Quite a few who can only say "it sucked", and one guy who tries to say all this stuff about how the movie is below him and follows the equation of others.
I'm currently watching it for the first time, and greatly enjoying it. I don't see any of the crap that people are saying badly about this movie. It really does just seem like it was either above their heads or they didn't like the slow moving pace of the film. It just not a film for everyone, in the same vein that Grindhouse was amazing but just not for everyone.
I watched it last night and I didn't particularly care for this film. In my opinion, the reason many people haven't liked this film is because the flow of the movie really, really drags in the middle.
The ending is decent and there are some suspenseful moments, but the payoff is not worth what it takes for the viewer to get there. In short, they lost me before they could build to the climax. My two cents.
seriously this movie deserves a lower rating. it was the most boring, slow moving, unoriginal, piece of *beep* I have ever had to sit through. I am telling you now to never see this movie, you will finnish the movie feeling like you just wasted your time and that your life is now somewhat worse.
no consense here... i guess you watched something completely different than me... i don't know...
but it reminds me of the movie. the family outside at the bed have a completely different view of the situation than the coma patient although they are in the same room. there are worlds between them and so is the intellect of movie-viewers. some are able to get into something, some are just there for the moving pictures.
yeah, because Wayne above you clearly has no understanding of symbolism or metaphor. it pains me to see people defend a movie for the sake of defending it and pulling the "some people just cant grasp whats really going on" card. Like other people have said, it would have gotten its message across just as well if it were half an hour instead of beating a dead horse for 3 times that.
Ive never posted on any movie before, but i felt i had to with this one. Yes the movie has some intresting scenes. i admit i couldnt turn it off but the whole thing left me feeling very disapointed.they could of made so much more out of this. 2.5/10
You just dont get this film, its not for you. Is it a low IQ or something else - I dont know. This movie is far better than Jacob's Ladder and The Jacket. 10/10.
I don't understand why you bring in IQ to the equation. I myself have an IQ of 140 and have watched this movie 3 times just to see if I missed some dialogue or some symbolism along the way, but yet I still come to the conclusion of a weak, extremely drawn-out movie.
You sit there for about half to two thirds of the movie discovering what his fears are and how he experiences them within his vegetated state, big deal.
I agree with the many others in saying this movie may have been of some substantial quality if it was about 20-40 minutes in length, not 108. Overall I'd give this a 3/10, not really worth watching in my opinion. [But after all that's all it is, an opinion]
If you were an intelligent person you would have agree that its a masterpiece. Even if the theme of the film bored you, you should have appreciate the effort of the producers/cast etc. in building the great atmosphere. I found this film entertaining from the beginning to the end(108 minutes could easily be doubled). Starting with Judas, hospital, racial 'prejudices', through disappointment with his family members, and then ending on true horror itself coma - this movie is a genuine equivalent of a word FEAR and disappointment with life itself.
Please people, just give your own opinions of the movie. You're NOT EVER going to be able to change anyone else's mind about anything on an internet forum so why even try?
My own opinion:
Interesting idea. Good acting. Pacing could be better - too drawn out in parts. Overall rating: 6 or 7 maybe? Who cares, I enjoyed the movie, that's all that mattered.
Wow. People on this board are awesome. Why can't people just realize that different people have different tastes? Some movies just don't connect with some as much as they do with others.
I just finished this movie. I can say that it was entertaining, but a little long. It could have been a little shorter. The concept has been used before, but it was used in a new way. Overall, I would give it maybe a 7 out of 10. Worth the watch. That is just my opinion. Take it or leave it. I couldn't care less which you do.
movie was good, if the director was someone huge, like kubrick or hitchcock, and he made an identical copy, the world would love this movie...it was unfortunately low budget and did not get any publicity...
for those psych majors...note how this is similar to skinner's idea of following the bandwagon, and lack of human control, and how conformity rules everything...even opinions...
I rate movies pretty fairly and I didn't think this was too good of a film myself. There seemed to be a lot of elements added in that didn't make much sense, I tried to understand the symbolism or metaphors but it confused me. At the end with Mandigo torturing the protagonist and a tree appearing on his chest confused me as to what the director was trying to say. The nurse and the tree on her back. The west wing and the lower class individuals didn't seem to fit to me. If someone could explain these things better I'd probably appreciate the movie a bit more. I honestly think Jacob's Ladder is an amazing movie and this really doesn't compare but it was a good attempt. 4/10.
