Exactly how I wanted it to end *spoiler*

From the moment Firth's character stood up for Biel when she arrived I was hoping they'd end up together. You could tell from the start Barnes character wasn't right for her, and Firth's character didn't belong there. They seemed mean't for each other. I would have been happy if she had left, alone, but I was more than happy that they both left, together.

same here.

reply

True, but Ben Barnes is a hottie.

reply

I didn't like them leaving together. I'd have preferred if he struck out on his own, after her departure. I was kind of hoping the butler would go with her.

reply

it was the dance that did it for me

In a fair universe, we would all be better people.

I couldn't stand either one of them, so I was glad that they ran of together. Plus it makes it easier for John to get a divorce/annulment... his wife ran off with his FATHER, for heaven's sake.

At least for a while I think...

Realistic.
They can't marry. Mrs Wittaker never would free him - divorce would lead to a loss of home-estate for her. But he had no foundation for divorcing her - he was guilty side, not her. A century ago the laws and morals were quite merciless.

So, what kind of future Larita were to expect? With him?
Kind of free liaison, no more.

reply

You forget that women had very few rights back then. We had just gotten the vote in 1920. I'm not so sure Mr. Whittaker would have gotten the wrong end of the stick. After all, all the judges back then were men and more likely to take the man's side over the woman's.

reply

Yeah, John was too childish and inmature, while Larita seemed more clever and serious..I also tought they were not a good couple and I expected they would not last very much together..It was not a surprise Larita ended up with Jim.I could see that coming when she was constantly talking with him in that cabin, while John talked and spent time with Sarah. The split was a fact since you could see John and Larita didn't share anything but sex and laughs and how both were looking for a shoulder to cry on other people....

A little while into the movie I realised that they would end up together and I was cheering them on the the whole way after that. They were so much more right for each other. And Colin Firth is so much sexier than Ben Barnes.

reply

According to Jessica Biel, they didn't end up together. But Colin Firth thought they did. So did they? Or didn't they?

Either. Neither.

reply

Jessica probably said that because she thought--from her modern perspective--that Colin Firth was too old for her. From the perspective of the past and the characters, no one would blink at the age gap.

reply

I just came on here to see how it ended- I was watching it on TV when I was interrupted and missed the very last scene... I was really hoping Colin Firth and Jessica Beil's characters ended up together! That dance scene was steamy!
So he just hopes in the car with her and they drive away? Did they kiss?

reply

She gets her car and is ready to drive away when he walks up, gets in the car and they drive away together, no kiss though...

Jane: What I want is a little smile.
Lisbon: Well, you can't have everything.

reply

I never thought it would end with Jim and Larita together, but it is what I wanted from the moment he defended her.

reply
