I have rarely seen such an awful actress. At first I thought the bad acting was part of the comedy, but then realized it was *unintentionally* funny.
How can I tell these American actresses apart anymore? They all have the same nose job, lip job, veneers, and their forehead never moves. I'll watch Kristen Scott Thomas any day instead.
She's worse in The Illusionist, but I agree, pretty awful. Fortunately Easy Virtue's sharp dialogue makes it bearable but all through the film I kept thinking of other actresses who would have been so much better. I know Scarlett Johansson is a bit overexposed right now but I thought she'd have been perfect. Any other ideas?
Previously there must be Zellweger in Biel's place. Do you like her more?
I'm not. So I was glad to see Jessica there - and to hear, too! She's good and surprising enough in the film. It's funny if you think a director can just pick up any actor he want. And at any time.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought this. OMG, she was HORRIBLE! It sounded just like she was reading them off a cue card with her monotone, droning voice. Who did she sleep with to be cast in this?
I agree. I thought perhaps Scarlett would be better in it too. Just for the fact that Firth and her would have better chemistry (after Girl with a Pearl Earring) I found Jessica out of her league in this movie.
Totally disagree with most other commenters. I enjoyed the film and didn't find Jessica Biel to be a detriment at all. She made her character interesting to watch.
She is as wooden here as any actress/actor I've ever seen. I am about to turn off the movie, but I thought I would check in here and see if I was alone in my opinion. I see that I am not. She not only is dull, she's not even likable, like Renee Zellwegger (sp?) whom I like, anyway ... mentioned elsewhere in this thread. It's painful. Excuse me, I must put another movie into the dvd player. God she just gets worse and worse ... and now she just killed the dog I think ... I thought it would be impossible to ruin a Noel Coward play, but I have been proven wrong.
This is Noel Coward--just hit the mark and say your lines the dialog carries all before it. You don't have to be good in a Coward play/movie, just able to speak English well enough to be understood.
She's among my least favorite actresses, & gained no ground with this one. But I didn't watch this film for her, it was just incidental that she was lead actor, is all. Thankfully the rest of the cast made up for her. Overall, I thought it was pretty cute but easily could've been SO much better Shame that.
"Hey, how come Andrew gets to get up? If he gets up...we'll all get up...IT'LL BE ANARCHY!!"
opinions offered her concerning Biel's supposed "wooden" acting are coming from those who've ne'er acted before in their life,
1st of all, I don't understand how you can possible know that to be true?
Personally speaking, no, I've never acted - other than in the occasional school play - however, I base my opinion of Biel's acting on her over all body of work & in relation to the many other capable actors I'm familiar with. I really don't believe you have to be a professional to know if one can act or not. If Biel is not connecting with her audiences then she's failing on some level. If she's impressing her peers, fellow actors, directors, etc. than good for her. That should mean a great deal to her. But I'd hope that any actor would not be completely satisfied with that, that they'd continue to strive to earn the same appreciation from their audiences as well. And maybe she is. She's still young and may very well end her career as an accomplished & well-loved actor after all.
So, are you a professional actor? And assuming you're here in her defense, what is your opinion of her work over all?
"Hey, how come Andrew gets to get up? If he gets up...we'll all get up...IT'LL BE ANARCHY!!" reply share
Yes, good point, but edwardjames was not quoting anybody - he was giving an example of how a word might be typed. In that context, he used the period/full stop quite correctly.
I see, and I should have noted the "assuming you're American" in your previous post. Unfortunately it's a moot point until jamesedwards informs us of his nationality...
That's one of the aspects of the "global village" I do enjoy: getting to know how people in other corners of the world operate, and what their sets of rules are. (I'm not American, by the way, though I did spend a three lovely months there in 2002. I evidently still have a lot to learn with regards to the various grammatical/syntax/spelling customs too!)
This thread is a joke - if it was Scarlet in the role it would be exactly the same thread except it would be trashing her instead. Biel was very good in this, a view shared by many reviews.
You are abs. right. She's bright and interesting. People used to choose someone to bite. Hardly matters who'd be the victim. It's in fact "looking for a scapegoat".
The only one thing about Biel I don't like in this film - her being blond. I may easily imagine the director's idea why, but it just doesn't suit her.
I rather liked her in this role. I think overall she made a like-able, symphathetic character. Maybe not all her scenes are examples of great acting (to put it delicately), but enough of them are pretty decent, so I wouldn't say she was awful. I especially enjoyed the dancing scene, she had this look of a hurt frightened animal who would not back down, it's right after her husband refuses to dance with her and she moves to the middle of the room and kicks her leg back. And then we see that look, so full of emotion.
I've seen this film and the Illusionist back to back and I didn't think she did a bad job in the other film either. It was required of her to appear beautiful, kind and sensitive and she delivered just that. I'd rate her performances as something in between adequate and enjoyable.
I agree with you completely! You put it into perfect words without being nasty to the posters who disagree. I never once thought anyone was acting badly in the movie because I was so enthralled with the plot of the movie and the dialogue, etc. In fact, I've now watched this movie three times and have LOVED it each time! I wish they would make more intelligent movies like this one! And, I loved how the Brits are from Britain and the one American is from America! None of that fake accent crap! LOL! Overall I find the movie a delight and I think Jessica Biel was beautifully cast. The character is supposed to be a woman and she has the looks, and the body, to pull it off! A lot of people are toting Renee Zellweger, who I also love, but a small, skinny woman couldn't have pulled off this role the way Jessica did! And I just love Colin Firth as well! The dancing scene at the end was HOT!!!!
I actually thought Jessica Biel was miscast. This could've won an Oscar if they had Scarlet Johansson, Amy Adams or even Kirsten Dunst just to name a few.
I thought Jessica did a great job in this and in the Illusionist. She's actually a very good actress and it's good she's taking a varity of roles to display her talents.
