Is there a reason for all the constant smoking in every episode? And also the emphasis on it with disgusting close ups of the cigarette and person smoking it!
It’s not even product placement for advertising either, as the brand isn’t even mentioned or shown. It all seems a rather pointless and needless distraction to me.

Anyhow, I'm also thinking the SMOKING is simply a way to REINFORCE the habit rather than as a way to PROMOTE a specific brand.
Because as long as one sees people smoking it probably also doesn't matter much what brand it would be.
Just the process itself would result in someone who SMOKES having a desire to do so reinforced by watching someone else smoking?
Sort of like whenever you see someone else YAWNING then you'd also tend to YAWN as well???

I find that in modern television, smoking is a way to show that people are flawed, and not some laudable perfect heroes. So perhaps the idea is that a lot of people on this show are flawed.

It's been a long time now since one watched this show so one can't recall who smoked and who did not.
It's drama and not a political manifest. Characters will sometimes do things that you don't like.
