Will the France blu-ray of Caprica play on North American PS3s?

Does anyone know?

I'd like to order it, but I'm finding a lot of contradictory information online as to whether the region coding will work in North America or not on a PS3.

All the reviews I've managed to dig up on youtube are from Australia, New Zealand, or from European countries so they aren't of any help to me.

Has any one here from Canada or the US bought the French release on blu-ray and had it work on a PS3?

reply

Inquiry - why are you attempting to purchase the French version of the blu-ray?

reply

Because it's the only place the show is available on blu-ray. It's only available on dvd everywhere else, and it's a show that benefits a lot of HD.

The Blu-ray in Frrance has the english language track, and the french subtitles can be turned off, so I can watch the show in HD exactly like when it aired.

The one thing I need to find out before I order it though is if there will be any region compability issues.

It also contains all of the DVD sets' special features, including commentary tracks, production diaries, etc.

A review, with lots of information:

No, it won't.
North American PS3 can only play 60Hz (or 24Hz) NTSC-compatible BDs whereas European BDs are synced at 50Hz (PAL-compatible). It's the same problem with the UK-released BBC BDs: all-region, but 50Hz, therefore won't play on NA systems.
You need a BD player that can convert the output to 60Hz.

Speaking of wrong formats, funny but true: On the heels of giving Queen Elizabeth an iPOD with his speeches on it as a gift (not kidding, wish I was)

President Obame gave the Prime Minister a set of DVDs of classic American movies. Not exactly a thoughtful gift, but the kicker was, they were in the wrong format.

Hilarious. Yet sad at the same time.

reply

Well, the "format" (the standard rather) was okay - all EU TVs and DVD/BD players can play both PAL and NTSC video sources - but the region code is a bitch.

reply

There's some wee trick on my player to change the region. Go on a certain screen and push up, down, left, right or something and you can change to region free.

Might help if the OP is still considering the French Blu-ray's.

reply

This is correct, but also note:

BluRay discs are region coded and The BluRays in France are quite unlikely Region Code B (=Europe) while North American players will require Region Code A.

So I'm prettu sure it won't work.

The Caprica BDs are not region-coded (or all-regions). If your BD player or TV is PAL/50Hz compatible, you can play them. Check with the vendor of your BD player and TV set to see if either comes with a converting function. For example EU DVD players used to contain an NTSC to PAL 60Hz converter circuit to play US videos on EU TVs.
The US PS3 does NOT come with this feature.
