Guarantee this would be rated 8.0+ if you discounted fans of the books

I'll start by saying that I've never read them, and I don't plan on reading them because I don't have the time or the interest. That being said, I am aware of what his physical appearance is in the book and how it is directly contradicted by the casting of a 5'8"ish Tom Cruise. All I can say about that is... I really don't give a damn. I watch movies to be entertained, and god damn did this movie accomplish that and more. I mean, the car chase scene alone was enough to warrant 8 stars. You just don't see them being produced and shot in that fashion. It was so organic and the director captured it in such a unique way, thanks to Cruise's skills as a professional driver, for his desire to do as many of his own stunts as possible, for his love cinema, and his love for his fans. I'd venture to say that nobody does and gives more than Tom Cruise when on a set of an action/adventure film. The guy is just wholeheartedly committed to satisfying his fans and because of that, I think the casting was a terrific one.

Agreed so many nerdy fan boys of this very average book series rated this awesome film 1's because they were upset. Thats a fact

reply

It's worse than average, he gets shot in the chest and the bullet doesn't penetrate because he is so muscular...

Their allowed to hate the casting choice... It's a free country.

Just because you can't read, you're content on your ignorance.

If the author wants to sell his character, he's free to.

You are entitled to your opinion. Just respect the rights of other to have differing opinions.

If you'd bothered to read any of the threads here, you'd find that Cruise's professional dedication was rarely in question. This movie pi..ed us, book fans off for many reasons and the first and foremost being - this is anything but a Jack Reacher movie. The Reacher character is popular for a reason, which led to this movie being made, ending up in all of the things that make Reacher popular being left out.

This is an entertaining movie (and even that not as much IMO, certainly not an 8+), but not a Reacher movie.

I've also read all the books and am watching the movie right now for the first time, and this is totally right. It's not Reacher. Cruise is playing some other guy who has virtually nothing in common with the star of the books. (Also, maybe it's just FX but I can barely understand what he's saying half the time. He mumbles.) If you're not a fan of the books then don't worry about it.

No chance. The dialogue is awful and the scritp is all too convenient. The character's motivations are non-existent and the films tries to up the shock value on a number of times. Mediocre.

reply

Well, I'm a fan of the books and I never got around to watching this till it came on Amazon Prime because I, too, thought Cruise was wrong for the part. Even so, I gave it an 8 because it's really a pretty good movie despite the miscasting. And maybe if I hadn't read the books I'd have given it a 9, so I figure my casting doubts cost 1 point.

reply

Even if a book weren't involved and this were an original offering, it would still get a low rating because it stars Tom Cruise! I think Rain Man and Magnolia are the only two films on this site that Cruise stars in that get an 8.0 rating and I can think of several more Cruise films that deserve at least that!

reply

I really don't like Cruise, but I like a lot of of his movies. This isn't one of them. I like the way it was made, McQuarrie knows his way around a camera, but, as someone else here put it, it is very forgettable. And, apart from all the other things that make it that way, this is one of Cruise's lamest performances in the 30ish movies I've seen him.

I don't think the movie was THAT good. It was pretty cool though and it would definitely have a higher rating if people weren't so pissed about the casting. I thought Cruise did a fine job, he fit into the character.

reply

He played a generic action star who had nothing in common with the character of the books. They might as well have inserted Harry Potter into the role.
