Am I one of the few that think this was Better than Tangled?

Hi All,

I find it perplexing how many people go on about Tangled being a near perfect film whilst hitting out at how much of a 'flop' the stunning The Princess and the Frog was...

Now - I cannot fathom why that is.

TPATF is such a beautiful film - well directed, great songs, fantastic plot and it was essentially a film that mirrored the 90s Disney feel. Whereas I found Tangled to be juvenile and not half as engaging - whilst feeling not at all like Disney. The animation fell short in my opinion also.

Overall - I still personally think 2D animation is what Disney should be sticking to in regards to their classic canon films. Whilst their 3D/ Computer generated animation output should be under the Pixar brand. To elaborate - Chicken Little through to Tangled, I feel are more so Pixar in their aesthetics.

Now with films on the horizon such as Frozen - I fear that 2D animation is being disregarded when really the market calls for it - how many other studios are using 2D? Hole in the market anyone!

I am also concerned that these titles are boring. Why not just call them - The Snow Queen or Rapunzel? It feels so stagnant at the moment with these so called genderless titles... A huge WTF is needed there. Genderless? Do not make me laugh.

Does anyone share my thoughts or am I ranting to the wrong crowd?

I'm with you!

I enjoyed Tangled, thought it was a great film, but it was an entirely different beast from our classic 90's Disney animated films. The Princess and the Frog, while certainly not up to par with The Little Mermaid or The Lion King, did have the same charm in theaters. It was like walking into the house you grew up in and seeing that it was all the same, you've just gotten bigger.

TPATF wasn't entirely well made despite all the effort they put into it- good and magical, but it tried too hard to please the political correctness pushers. So many plotholes, not much memorable about the music, and unoriginal stereotype characters. and I still love it, but you can't ignore all that.

I agree about the titles though, I think pretty much everyone is annoyed with them. who gives a hoot what little boys like or dont like? do you even see Tangled or Brave toys made for boys? No? Oh, and how about how no one goes to such trouble to cater to girls like they are for boys here?

I wish Disney also stayed truer to the fairy tales/stories. Look how enormously the changed BATB, TLM, Pocahontas, Tangled, etc.! The Little Mermaid DIES! I LOVE how properly European-feeling and true to the darkness of the stories Snow White, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc. were. I mean, I'm not trying to say we should give kids nightmares, but nor should we be so terrified to let them see anything that isn't smothered in political correctness, cheesy plots, and funny, hammy villains who really aren't that harmful.

I agree. TPATF is overall better as a whole movie all together. Tangled was so boring and too long for my interest.

Am I the only one that hates Tangled? PATF was a genius.

Years later, I've come to think that while P and t F was rather bland and definitely lacking (Tiana? what a bore. Naveen? not enough of you honey. Everyone else, how are you only in the movie for like five minutes?) in parts, it doesn't give off this "lol randumb, ecksdee 2000s" vibe Tangled does.

I remember reading about how the directors of Tangled said the movie would have some more "contemporary" humor and man, were they right. PaTF will age a little more gracefully in that regard, I think.

Tangled had a better score. MUCH better. And more traditional. Although it would have been better with Kristen Chenoweth doing the lead, as she was originally supposed to....

"He carries illegal weapons, drives fast cars & wears clothes obviously designed by a homosexual."

reply

Lol modern pop music is traditional?

Totally agree about Kristen though, girl sounds way more like a typical Disney chick than Mandy Moore and can belt it better.

Tangled's score was NOT pop; it was very standard musical theatre/Broadway style, as I remember it. The rhymes were perfect (as opposed to imperfect), which is theatre writing; pop songs almost never use perfect rhyme schemes (i.e., "mine/time" (pop) vs. "mine/line" (theatre)). And the music scans as theatre with verse/chorus and traditional AABA patterns.

Nope I'm with you OP I prefer TPATF over Tangled. Loved the music in TPATF .

Tangled is a pile of sugar, sparkles and blonde hair. Sure Rapunzel is a feminist who manipulates the crap out of Flynn but I feel that them adding that was supposed to "make up" for how saccharine, whiny and timid Rapunzel's personality was overall on top of being really unoriginal (how many times are we gonna be given a spunky, independent free thinking princess? Why not more ballbusters like Mulan, Esmeralda and Pocahontas?). Tiana is still a stronger, smarter heroine and honestly adding a black princess was what we needed, not Cute Little White Blonde Princess #176. Bout freaking time.

rapunzel is NOT a feminist. i mean feminists usually like her because oooh she manipulates flynn and wants an adventure but that has nothing to do with equality or whatever!

and mulan is NOT a ballbuster. she is really sweet and humble and shy. brave and secure but not a ballbuster. sheesh.

oh and nice racism there, if i said something that rude about the strong woc characters i'd get attacked -_-

You're hideous and sexy!

I think what disappointed me the most about Tangled was that, despite taking a lot of liberties from its source material, it just ends up being many different Disney movies at once.

Rapunzel was okay, even though she had almost the same motives as Princess Jasmine, and then you have characters like Flynn, who's not only the same type of character as Aladdin, but a more obnoxious version of Aladdin; Pascal is pretty much the same character as Flit from Pocahontas, and Mother Gothel (despite being a decent villain) is just a female version of Judge Claude Frollo. I'm not saying Tangled is a "bad" movie, it's just very unoriginal.

Now you could argue that PATF was unoriginal as well (and let's face it, who hasn't? ). Though I'll admit, the character designs in that film were a bit generic and familiar (one person on this board even mentioned that Naveen's face looks too much like Prince Eric's), and even today people are suspecting that this film had some Non-Disney influences (mainly Anastasia, The Swan Princess, and All Dogs go to Heaven).

Despite these minor issues, I still think PATF had a more fresh and unique take on its story than Tangled did, and I know I'm in the minority here but, I think this movie had better songs than Tangled too (except for "Going Down the Bayou", which was very unnecessary for the story IMO).
