I gave it an 8. Why? Because it was entertaining, fast paced, it had great action, a kick-ass predator and awesome merciless aliens, decent story and decent actors, believable and not over the top.
I've read tones of ranting on the forum but everybody just making idiotic complaints. I've yet to read (or notice) any actual flaws or stuff that were extremely off. Only complaints like why did they killed the kids, why was this on earth, why was only one predator sent, why did they nuke them, why oh why etc... which are all plain silly and make perfect sense if you take at least a few seconds to think about.
To those that gave it 4 or less, I'm really curious what sci-fi action movies did you rate a 9 or 10?
Dude I agree, not completely, but agree with most of your points. I think you have to keep in mind that many people expect the movie to be more than what it set out to be. It wasn't supposed to be the best film of all time, just an action film that doesn't take too much thinking to really enjoy. If the people that rate it badly can't get past that then I feel a little sympathetic towards them. It's kind of similar to critics being unnecessarily harsh to films because they try to impose their so called 'knowledge' on an unknowing subject and attempt to make it out to be something that it never intended to be (which is frustrating).
I personally thought this film had a relatively good production value, okay acting, okay script and plot, and overall was a good watch. Of course it was not the greatest film of all time but it satisfied my 'sci-fi urge'.
I'll have to agree. I don't think every movie should be taken as seriously as the people of imdb generally take them. This was just a fun popcorn-flick. It was stupid as hell, with lots of very questionable material, stupid characters and awkward dialogue, but the action was brutal and I though the aliens were done very well. For the first time we actually saw what would happen if Ripley's prediction came true, and the aliens reached earth. Just one damn alien was enough to cause everything to go to hell, and force the government to nuke them. I especially liked the scene in which the army finally came to help, and they just got killed in a matter of moments without anyone knowing what was going on. Not like in Aliens (a far superior movie overall of course) where the aliens just got shot to bits whenever they showed their faces.
Personally I prefer being able to enjoy dumb movies to being jaded as hell and only liking imdb top250 movies.

I agree (except the "awesome merciless aliens" bit). They looked downgraded but at least they were not the focal point of the film - the Predalien mostly was.
It was quite a poor movie but I wouldn't give it anything below 5.3. I agree that it was awesomely entertaining, fast paced definitely and had great action. You could actually sit back and relax at watching it.
If anything I wonder how this movie is so underrated as compared to Predators that got a 6.5.

This was entertaining? How? If you like seeing characters trying hard to act like a bad-ass, but only come off annoying, than by all means keep enjoying it. What action? The movie is so dark you can't even see a thing. Furthermore, the fights only involve Alien run towards the Predator, then getting slaughter by 1 of many Predator weapon. The Grid VS Celtic fight and Queen VS Scar fight are so much better than the fights in AVP-R.
Merciless Alien? We don't even get to see them in action, all they contributed in the film is to fill up the film's title, and to serve as props to make the predator look cool. The Aliens in this film don't even hide in shadow or stuff to attack their victim, they just simply run to them and get killed by the predator who seems to follow the heroes everywhere.
Story? What Story? The predator spaceship crash landed, several aliens escaped and turn some people into aliens. The Predator then comes and kill the Aliens, and then we have hero running around the city just to escape death. If this was considered a good story, then Cinderella is a masterpiece to you. The actors' acting were decent? Half of the time the characters just trying to act bad-ass. They weren;t believable either. e.g. Jesse had no problem seeing people die from the Alien, but suddenly the moment before she died, she suddenly scream and run away to get killed by the Alien. Jesse's Ex, just stood there like he's farting or something, then getting pinned down. Why didn't he run away with the hero earlier?
You want flaws, I'll give you a flaw, this film is too dark. Sure you can turn the brightness up, but if you were watching it in the theatre (like how I did), then you'll be really pist that you spent your money seeing a black screen with sound of grunt. The film did not make the Aliens look threatening at all.
The flaws that you mentioned contribute to something. I personally don't care about the kid dying, and I agree it's stupid that people complain that the kid died (get over it).
The reason why people is annoyed that this take place on Earth is because most of the AVP viewers are fans of the Alien's series. If you have watched the Alien's seires, the main character do everything she can to stop the transportation of the Aliens to Earth, but AVP and AVP-R kinda ignore this by making that the ALien has been on Earth all this time. Furtehrmore, another problem is that because the fact that this take place on Earth, we would have the stupid nuke ending.
The reason why most of us hate that only 1 predator was sent is because of what exactly how the film played out. The film is about AVP, therefore, there's obviously have to atleast have 1 predator lasting till the end. Therefore, we don't actually get to see a predator die or killed by the aliens if there's only 1 predator. That's exactly how AVP-R played out, we only had 1 predator, and we don't even see an Alien killing a Predator at all, which make them look ultimately weak and predictable.
The nuking is stupid because it's simply a bad way to end the film. It's like the the director did so much but then ran out of ideas on how to get rid of them, so then they decide oh well lets just nuke the down, because all American movie have to have Explosion!!! The main problem with the nuking is that it's uncreative and it kinda make it seems like too easy (ok so that's all it takes, nuking).
why did they nuke them, why oh why etc... which are all plain silly and make perfect sense if you take at least a few seconds to think about.
I agree the story isn't great, but when you describe it like that then the previous films don't have one either.
First alien movie is just a monster in a ship. Hell breaks loose. Second alien movie: an army group goes to investigate a planet and falls in a trap. Hell breaks loose. So on and so on...
And by the way, Predators do die in this movie. It's in the beginning, which makes the ship crash-land.
This sounds like I'm defending the movie too much. I gave it a 5/10. It was entertaining.
It would have been better if I could actually see what was going on?? They had (producers, directors, etc.) this film so dark I spent half my time trying to figure out what was what? I needed that Predator helment so I could see in the dark.
Loved the first AVP..it was great, this one left me in the dark ...Literally.
"We pruned the hedges of many small villages" (the three amigos)
i like about the film : there is no 'love stories' in film. the girl younger brother is in love with dies quickly without much drama. i hate when there is film featuring monsters and there is love story in a center of it. *beep* that
for the first time i actually wanted humans to preveil (other than that im on predators side ;) ), cause for the first time our land is attacked and i hoped/knew town is going to get executed by a bomb.and i liked it. in other films humans are exploring/colonizing/violentingOtherRacesTerritory and are killed for that. justice has to be made.
there isn't any human that is shown that can actually posses threat to either predator or alien, as can ripley from alien movies or that other female in avp. only arnold is in line for that and im good with that.danny glover only had luck with it. i still have to see predators with a.brody and i fear that im not gonna like it because of that
If you liked AvP:R then you will propably like that other movie similar to it... you know, the one where they filmed a turd with a tiny flag stuck in it for a solid 90 minutes, in bad lightning so you spend the first 10 minutes trying to figure out what the hell it is that you're staring at?
If you stare at a turd and after 10 minutes you realize it is actually a turd but continue to watch it still for another solid 80 minutes, in all honesty, you are a turd fan, so please stop ranting about your turd staring hobbies.
