What do you think is stopping Liz andJack from getting together?

They seem like a great match. I dont buy the whole platonic friends thing. It never works

reply

Liz and Baldwin ?

Do you mean liz and jack?

reply

Nerd.

reply

I love 'em both and this show, but I sensed absolutely NO sexual chemistry between the two.

Jack belongs to a younger, sleeker woman (Salma Hayek's character)--or an earthier more competent one (like Cece or Julianne Moore's character).

reply

How could you not "sense" sexual chemistry between them when the show clearly showed them flirting with each other, and in a couple of cases coming close to kissing?

That was the hate/love schtick that drove the Liz/Jack relationship. Of course they were never going to actually hook up, but that just pushed Jack to try to manage Liz's love life. Note that he favored Jack-clone Floyd and disliked Kriss.

How many of Jack's girlfriends were jealous of Liz at one point? Phoebe, Elisa...not sure who else. Obviously they saw Liz as romantic competition.

reply

I never once caught a romantic moment between liz and jack. please name a few scenes where they ever flirted.

reply

Exactly! They certainly had a good rapport, but sexual? No.

reply

Go back and watch the show again. There's one scene where they're about to kiss and then both break it off, embarrassed. There's also that one formal event where Jack invites Liz to accompany him and she isn't sure if it's a date at first.

Besides, I think Tina writes about that aspect of their relationship in Bossypants, that there's a romantic tension between them but that it'll never be requited.

reply

Its been awhile since I picked up Bossypants but I do believe Fey thought that fan pairing was out of left field. The episode where they're technically married seemed to be poking fun at this.

I mean, the whole relationship was based on this notion that Jack could 'fix' Liz, as a mentor would do.. that's how it was explained and that's what i ever got from their friendship.

I raise you the almost kiss scene to the actual kiss scene in the latter part of the series when they were both very clearly disgusted by the act.

reply

wab-3 is absolutely right.

Oh good GOD Lemon...be serious!!

Lol! Yep.

I will disagree. While they playfully teased the idea once or twice, it was almost always for subversive laughs to play with the fact that they didn't think about eachother that way.

I never felt any true sexual chemistry between the two, at least none that was intended to be taken seriously.

And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?

reply

One is a fictional character and one is a real person?

....and the show ended two years ago?

Much better than the other 8 Stubby's

I'm glad the writers never put Liz and Jack together. In my opinion, it would have been a predictable sitcom cliché and creepy beyond belief.

Exactly! I don't know what the OP's deal is, but he certainly failed on this subject. 30 Rock was too cool to fall into this cliche trap.

reply

Yes, but Tina wrote in an attraction tension between the two characters from the start. She discusses that in Bossypants. They would never consummate it, but it's there.

reply

I think that Jack saw her as a sister or a Bro and would have never been able to get passed that. And Liz probably doesn't think that his type would fit with her as a feminist.

I'm happy that Jack and Liz never ever got together BUT I definitely felt the sexual tension between them. Certainly in the episode 'Black Tie', at the end when Jack leans in to take her necklace off, there was absolutely a feeling that if Jack HAD been leaning in for a kiss, that Liz might have gone with it, even the way she says 'Jack..wait...', it sounds like the end of that sentence would have been 'Jack..wait...I want to do this but I don't know if we should'. I also got the feeling a number of times during the series that if Liz had been up for it, Jack would have slept with her in a heartbeat.

It does annoy me when people are so dismissive about the sexual tension between them, that all of us that saw it are idiots. For me, it was always there from the start but ultimately I'm very happy that nothing came of it, I find their relationship to be one of the best I've seen on TV/film.

Liz possibly feeling sexual feelings for Jack? Sure. In layman's terms: she didn't have that many options or luck (Okay, she had Sitcom options i.e. a pretty active sex life for the sake of entertainment a la George Costanza from "Seinfield", cue: YEAH RIGHT...)

Jack towards Liz? NEVER. In layman's terms: He can and has had anyone he wanted. Why would he go for Liz? No offense. In real life, guys like him wouldn't bat an eye at cardigan-wearing late-30s Liz.

There you go.

reply

Jack towards Liz? NEVER.

Jesus, have you not read Tina's book? She deliberately wrote in a bilateral sexual/romantic tension between Jack and Liz. She said exactly that in Bossypants. It's not a matter of debate.

reply

I get the impression that Tiny Fey doesn't really like cliches, and likes to be as original as possible with her plot lines and punch lines.

I appreciate your viewpoint, I just disagree with it. Jack could be a snob about who he did it with, for sure BUT it was alluded to that he had been with prostitutes, hell, he's up for it with Dratch's prostitute in the valentines day episode so I personally don't think that Liz being a 'cardigan wearing woman in her late 30s' would put him off, he definitely found her attractive imo, he was very impressed with her physically on a couple of occasions, I mean, for a shallow guy, there is no way he didn't notice how gorgeous she was when she was dressed up (especially in episodes like 'Black Tie' and 'Gavin Volure') and he even rates her as an '8' in the episode where she's having bedroom troubles with Carol AND when Liz questions why nothing ever happened between them in a later episode, he even remarks that any sex they might have had would have been great.

For all of Jacks criticism of Liz throughout the series, I personally got the feeling that he knew Liz deserved someone better than him. Ultimately though, Liz became the number one person he was closest to in the whole world and he would never have done anything to jeopardize that.

All this is just my take on it, if you feel differently, that's totally cool :-).

But never once did I get the sense that J&L were going to "do it".

They almost kissed once, so yeah, they definitely teased the idea that Jack and Liz would really knock boots.

... ... ...I'll be sure to tell that to all my female friends. Evidently, our real-life friendships aren't valid. 

Those two were always about 1 mm away from having Hot Sweaty Monkey Sex. Just like Moose and Squirrel, upon whom they were based.
