tuxedo in court bad form ?

why would the judge be upset that he is "overdressed" for court, why is willy even apologizing generally when you overdress people may think its weird but its almost never inappropriate. I would only ever apologize for under dressing....

formal > business > business casual > casual

he is dressing in formal whereas most lawyers dress in business...

reply

we, the viewers, know his reasons for dressing up (his suit was ruined and he had the choice of either dressing up or dressing down) but to the judge it comes across as being disrespectful, not taking things seriously or possibly just showing off

Being overdressed for an event is as bad or almost as bad as being underdressed.

Him showing up to court in a tuxedo also gives the impression that he has somewhere more important to be.

I don't think that the judge was upset or that Beachum was apologizing. He was just oddly dressed and slightly embarrassed for that, and the judge was teasing him. I mean, he called Beachum 007 :))

Exactly ! The judge was teasing him all the way.

Funniest line in the movie.

Because tuxedos are associated with operas, weddings, super-formal dinner parties, etc. It doesn't imbue the sense of seriousness that a courtroom demands.

There are 2 categories of formalwear for gentlemen: morning clothes and evening clothes. The former are worn from morning till 6PM. Tuxedos are strictly worn from 6 PM till dawn. Not surprisingly, most guys don’t know this, so they get married in a tux. Morning clothes are like what JFK wore at his Inauguration: grey beaver top hat, grey tailcoat with contrasting vest and an ascot, and grey trousers with a contrasting stripe running down the outside of each trouser leg.
