i think Ben Barnes would have been much better for the principal role. He is far more good looking and charismatic

in the beginning i was like "did they seriously pick this guy as the main character?" then after he gets decked out and his hair entensioned i completely loved him!
but thats jus appearance. even in the beginning, i thought he was completely sweet. not just his character, but i could tell that the actual person was a lil goofy, but sweet and charming and i loved him :D

He doesn't look great in the beginning but charming at the end of his transformation. Beside, you can always just read the book & picture a different guy.
I thought Charlie Cox was cute from the beginning and I found him more appealing and charismatic than Ben Barnes. Charlie Cox was very good at showing emotions with facial expressions and I found his smile to be very infectious. Of course the makeover just turned him from a cute loveable boy to sexy confident man.

velocityboy has hit the nail on the head there. It was perfect how he didnt look like a hero and then suddenly he was the gorgeous swash buckler. Very good casting.

Second, physically speaking Ben Barnes wouldn’t have been very convincing in the beginning. While Charlie is cute Ben is obviously a very handsome and attractive guy at first glance. Not only would he have looked odd playing the part of a good hearted dork but he is equal if not more handsome than the guy who plays Humphrey.
