I absolutely agree. HavenĀ“t seen this new one, though, but guess I'm not really missing anything...

reply

i have to disagree.. the grudge scared me, but ju-on made me laugh.

reply

i'm gonna be honest... no one laugh.

Scariest movie EVER has to be hands down THE EXORCIST...I still have to sleep with TV sometimes when I see it on TV, and I'm 24..

reply

Of course, there have been movies that I have seen that had moments that were shocking, gore, gruesome, etc.

But the "scariest" movie I have ever seen was The Exorcist because it combined multiple suspense with shockful moments.

reply

I've seen a lot of scary movies including the one's mentioned on this posting.. most of which don't do anything for me.. until I came across this little low budget gem of a movie..

The Haunted (1991) (TV)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102007/

In my opinion it puts all thoses big hollywood movies to shame.. It's doesn't need to use all those big special effects to get your heart going..

Nothing has terrified me so much as this little gem.. which is hard to believe but was put together on a low budget by a TV production.. if your a horror fan or like a good scare then this movie is a must.. good luck in getting hold of it.. I suggest ebay..

I should mention it's based on the true story of the Smurl Haunting:

reply

I can't believe someoe finally mentioned The Haunted. That movie scared the crap out of me when i was younger and I wish that i could find it. I think about the voice: "Janet...Janet..." and it still gives me the creeps. If you find it out there, you must let me know. It is on the Sci-Fi channel every now and then but always at some obscure time.

Boogeyman wuz highly underated i believe as a scary movie

reply

The Exorcist for me too. Everything else pales in comparison. I think it's my Catholic upbringing that makes it scarier.

reply

in the past few months ... i'd hav to say "Dead Silence"

reply

Ya the puppet gives me the creeps.

reply

Wow please noone name the exorcist or the shining...TWO of the dumbest movies ever...I hate people who think those 2 are scary because they are old and original, I mean if u saw them now you tell me you would be scared of that...Lol i saw the Exorcist recently and was laughing so *beep* hard. And The Shining I skipped through it because it takes like 6 and half hours to even "try" to scare me.And no movies have really scared me or given me nightmares. The Grude however made me jump out of my seat and was a little creepy when she that b*tch walked like frame by frame kind of sh*t...But the scariest movie ever would have to be...eh i dont know suggest some to me... but nothing older then the 90's and to the guy who posted this ...The 6th Sense you have got to be *beep* kidding me lol that wasnt a horror really but more a thriller it was good but not scary:)

I understand that you are a man who knows how to get things

You seriously dismiss two classic horror films and then propose something as awful as the Grudge as an alternative?

The mere suggestion that good horror movies are all post-80's is setting you up for disappointment!

reply

how come all people think that movies from the 70's are scary?

a) they try to make a good story, and it ends up being boring as hell
b) they try to scare you with effects, but they look like crap and makes the movie plain retarded.

the exorcist is retarded.

only movie that ever scared me was the grudge, kayako was way too creepy in the 1st movie

reply

Probably not so much the scariest....although pretty damn close, but DEFINATELY the best has to be 'the thing' with kurt russell.

Its even in IMDBs top 250. Thats a big feat for a horror.

reply

I was surprised to see that no one has mentioned REC. I've seen The Grudge, The Ring, The Exorcist, Omen(entire series) but the last ending scene of REC was the scariest scene i've ever seen in a horror movie.

What do you guys think of REC, anyone liked it ?

reply

This is a really a good movie. Something more similar to RAZ (Hindi movie which is a nut raiser). Don't count on the IMDB ratings they differs from person to person

But other horror movies that really scares me

1. Mirrors
2.Decendant
3.The Ruins
4.Orphanage
5. The Omen
6. The Exocist (2000)
7. Bled
8. Grudge
9. Exorcism of Emily Rose
10.AMITYVILLE HORROR (true Story)

and many more ......

reply

Amityville is NOT a true story. It is well known to be an scam to payoff bad debts by the Lutz's.

Oh no! We broke Mom's favorite vase playing basketball in the house!

reply

The Exorcist(don't care what anyone *beep* says) My sister's scared of The Grudge both original and remake

Matthew Followill is so purty. And he has dimples to make him purty

reply

Descendant? Do you mean "The Descent"?

[deleted]

The ring is the only movie to have ever genuinely scared me...and I've seen them all

reply

The only reason the ring scared me was because while my roommate and I were watching it the screen got staticy. Scared us half to death! If my phone had rang I would have run screaming out of the room.

reply

the ring was and is the scariest film ive seen to date..although the original thai shutter almost made me wet my pants.

reply

the ring doesn't necessarily terrify me, but it's become one of my favorite movies of all time. love it and the back story. all the asian versions as well.

reply

The Ring was by far the scariest movie I've ever seen

reply

End of the Line, the concept is very scary, even if the movie itself isn't

"Fear and pain may accompany death, but it is desire that shepherd it's certainty..."

reply

The Ring scared me, too the first time I watched it. Same with The Grudge. Love the original Exorcist, and even have a portrait tattoo of the face of Pazuzu (name of the demon who possesses Regan), but I actually find The Exorcist III (Legion) to be the scariest of the two. I didn't quite get it when I was younger, as I considered the first film scarier, but now, at 32 years old, I'm still legitimately freaked out by The Exorcist III; more so than one. It could be that the first film is more of a visceral-horror, while the third (which is the true sequel) is more of a psychological and atmospheric horror.

To me, The Exorcist III is sorely underrated, and probably always will be. The Exorcist II is at fault for this, as it's truly a pile of sh*t, and probably deterred fans of the original from viewing the Legion.

So, if you're one of the people who didn't give The Exorcist III a chance, stop what you're doing immediately, and watch it. Preferably alone in the dark. Or if you've seen it, but it's been a long time, and you disagree with me on my take, watch it again and see if you still find the original to be scarier.

MY GOD THAI SHUTTER WAS SCARY! I never get scared and i almost pooed LOL

reply

Finally got to see the original. You know what? You're totally right! I don't know that I consider it the BEST horror movie I've seen if you add up all the elements, but on scariness alone, it might be the #1. I'm absolutely blown away by it. From Thailand, of all places! Who'd have ever thought of that?! Don't get me wrong, I rate it highly among all the horror movies I've ever seen all totaled, possibly top 5. But in the Scare category the Thai original 'Shutter' probably wins top prize.

reply

I agree, the original Shutter was 1 of the scariest films I EVER SAW!

Noroi: the Curse

reply

the american grudge and some scenes in the grudge 2 are the only movies i have seen in a while that have given me nightmares.

reply

If were talking supernatural-scare films, some scenes in "What Lies Beneath" shocked me, as did the hospital scene in "An American Werewolf in London" - but to be honest I dont feel there have been ANY decent scary films in the past 15-20 years! The Ring was ok, but the rest seem to be generic storylines with crappy execution of plot and poor acting.

When I was younger, both Poltergeist and The Thing scared me half to death, but even if you were to watch these two now youd still feel a similar vibe to what they did for audiences when they were initially released. The Exorcist is widely accepted as the scariest movie of all time and although I wouldnt agree with this for myself, its important to remember that it largely depends on our own cultures and what scares us individually.

reply

Interesting question.Seen a lot of scary movies. When I first watched Ju On,I was totally scared, and thought I would never watch the ghost in that film again, but somehow I think back and its not so scary really. Also I watched Ringu and at that time I didnt know what was in it,I just heard it was a cut film in Japan and I was horrified at the end coz I was thinking maybe its really just a creepy mystery after all.One of the older films which scared me was Night of the living dead.Somehow I never cared for murderers so none of the slashers left any impact.I was repulsed by Cannibal Holocaust and Zombi 2 but not scared.I was terrified by Hitchcock's Psycho but somehow sympathy for Norman Bates cancelled the effect. Most inflential horror for me would be Exorcist but the scariest is prbably Ringu.

reply

Actually, I think Mothman Prophecies was really eerie and creepy...

**I want a Notebook romance...**

I agree completely!
Mothman Prophecies, dang that movie gave me the creeps!

reply

Oh my God yes!! how could I possibly forget... The Mothman Prophecies.... Ah!! That movie gave me chills... Very really eerie and creepy. lol

Not scary for me. Not even jumpy.
The Shining was the scariest movie I have ever seen.

We'll keep living it

reply

I dont remember if The Shining scared me or not, but it probably did the first time I saw it. However it is my favorite "horror" movie.

It's really sad, but the only movie I remember actually scaring me was the Blair Which Project. I watched it at my dads house alone, and his house was in the woods. That's the only movie I can remember being scared.

reply

How the hell can you not remember if your favorite horror movie was scary or not?? That makes no sense...

reply

The Descent freaked me right the hell out.
1408 actually did, too, but in a different way. Really messes with your head.

Hahah the ring actually scared me a little too in the beginning...
but idk about the scariest movie i've ever seen. i still havn't seen the exorcist yet hah but i think i have it on dvd so i'll watch it sometime when i'm not alone..=/

reply

The exorcist, haha a joke.

The exorcist: The version you've never seen (A director's cut) is pretty frickin scary.

reply

Exorcist or Blair Witch,

And I've seen a LOT of horror movies, old, new, low budget, big budget.

All of us are in the gutter but some are looking up at the stars

reply

I didn't find The Ring particularly scary per se but the expression of sheer terror on the face of the dead girl in the closet (close to the start of the movie) was masterfully done. It still disturbs me!

reply

I think at the moment the scariest movie I have ever seen is "Dead Silence" I have always been freaked out by those Ventriliquist Dummies. Don't know why really, just have been.

I also believe any horror movie can be scary, if you put yourself in the right frame of mind while watching it. Watch it late at night and turn off all the lights and let your mind really get into the movie and you can freak yourself out.

Glad to hear mention of The Descent, Kristina-Elizabeth. That movie is one of the only horror films to have actually had me terrified...and (like many of the posters on this thread) I have seen a TON of horror flicks.
Chakushin Ari (the original Japanese "One missed call") deserves special mention. It is not "terrifying" per se but is definitely the best ghost horror movie I have seen.

reply

[rec], thai Shutter and Jacobs Ladder.

reply

The Ring (original USA version) and way before that, the Simone Signoret version of Diabolique. And maybe Saw (again, the first one).

reply

I love horror films. They are my favorite, but none of them has ever just scared the crap out of me. No I take that back, I just thought of one. No one has said it yet so dont laugh. What Lies Beneath scared me. When it first came to theathers, my mother and I went and everytime the music would stir up, we'd be agruing on whose gonna look at the screen to see whats happening. It was hilarious. I was younger then, I can watch it now. LOL!

"I'mma need you to calm that down"

reply

For some reason the movies that you guys have mentioned are not scary to me. The Shining, The Exorcist and What Lies Beneath just happen to be A+ movie making and superb acting, but not scary. The scariest movie ever made has to be the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I had to stop watching, then start back watching it because the family seemed as if they were really crazy. I have the movie on dvd, and it has great extra footage.

reply

the excorcist, the version you've never seen (director's cut) is the version i own, and the only version i have seen. i own it, but i never watch it. i think i should again, but i am too afraid as of now. freaked me out. i have always wanted to see the orig texas chainsaw massacre, but haven't gotten around to it. in fact, i haven't seen any texas chainsaw massacre ever... should do that sometime. any other scary movies someone could suggest?

Cheers!

You need to watch Exorcist III !! Do it now!!!! :)

reply

i love What Lies Beneath. Actually Shutter reminded me A LOT of that movie towards the end whenever you find out a certain something that Ben did. but the scariest movies i think i've seen would have to be Blair Witch Project (first time i saw it), the last minute or so of Saw, and the Ring.

reply

I have yet to see a movie that has actueally scared me.

Weird...but true.

I know it's mad, but if I go to hell,
will you come with me, or just leave

reply

You gotta turn your brain off for a bit when you watch horror. Not in the way you would for cheesy action movies, but more in the sense that you need to suspend your disbelief. Also, try watching horror movies alone with the lights out at night.

reply

Exorcist and Exorcist 3

reply

The remake of Amityville horror. Ok it wasnt that scary, but there was that one scene in the bathroom when that ugly looking thingy just popped out of no where. Yes I jumped, but other than that, it wasn't as scary!

"I'mma need you to calm that down"

reply

yeah i really thought the Amityville horror movie was scary. i seen like every horror movie and that one some reasons freaks me out same with the grudge. i think like ju-on was a big joke same with the original shutter. i thought the ring was kind of dumb but the ringu was very good. i thought the exochrist was pretty scary because i guess being catholic and mothman phrophency freaked me out and i have no reason why.
