We refunded...

3 separate people today for this movie. 2 stayed an hour. One saw the whole movie and demanded a refund. I'm now even more curious to see it. The trailer was so charming and fun, how could it be THAT bad?

reply

Its just a bunch of scenes barely linked together with no regard to an actual plot. Its too boring to even care about the characters.

Yeah, I sat for an hour or more and wondered, where the hell is thins thing going? Like the OP said, the preview was interesting. The film was pretty bad.

reply

I read a lot of reviews before watching some of it... and as I had expected, anytime you have a ton of well known actors in one film, you can bet that the film is going to be...horrible. I think for the most part the Cohen's do a good job, but failed on so many other levels. I am disappointed with a lot of the movies coming out of Hollywood, I starting to explore more of the films made in other countries now.

Well, that was my 2 cents on the show, good luck.

reply

I'm watching it right now and am 45 minutes into it. It lacks a plot.

reply

So sorry if doesn't have traditional movie structure. Perhaps you should stick to watching Saturday Morning Cartoons? They have simple, 22 minutes long plot you will enjoy!

Thank you Ethan.

reply

It has NO structure.

reply

People don't deserve refunds for not liking a movie. A theater can't promise that every movie will be to everyone's taste. You should have stabbed them.

Procrastination fools you into thinking you succeed merely by not failing.

reply

The first two simply asked to see a different movie. The last person, I honestly don't know why my manager gave them a refund.

reply

I know someone who would do that. Your manager is a good guy, but if I were manager, I'd consider someone who watched an entire movie, then demanded a refund, to be nothing more than a pirate. Instead of torrenting, he's, in person, wanting a movie for free.

I'd say no and expect him to never return.

Some people are just morons. (Not your boss; the guy asking for the refund.)

reply

Hard to blame the guy wanting the refund. The movie keeps teasing that something worthwhile is going to happen and then the credits roll. Watching this movie in its entirety and wanting a refund at the end is perfectly understandable.

reply

By that logic, it's okay to ask for a refund for anything you've used or even eaten. It's unethical.

reply

What meal have you eaten in the hopes that it would eventually taste better? That's a stupid comparison.

Touch darkness and darkness touches you back.

reply

Actually...
I've bought various candy thinking that maybe the flavor combination on the package might be interesting, or cause I was dazzled by the packaging, or cause I've tried other products by said brand and they were OK, or cause I was hungry or sleepy and my blood sugar was low so my reptile brain was doing the shopping...

Only to be disappointed completely by the actual product but... what am I supposed to do then?
Throw away an entire bag, bar, box or whatever?
I just PAID for that *beep* What am I - made of money?

So... Stick with it 'till the end, maybe it'll get better.
Maybe if it breathes over night... or if it's cold... or warmed up... or with coffee... or booze...

reply

There's always that one *beep* who swoops in to make a completely nonsensical post.

Touch darkness and darkness touches you back.

reply

And that would be you.

reply

no, it's a perfectly suitable comparison actually. if you finish off your steak and THEN complain that it didn't taste nice, you will not get a refund. you ate the damn thing - you wouldn't have eaten it had there been anything actually wrong with it.

a cinema exists to showcase films from various production companies. if you have a beef with the presentation as such - picture, sound, annoyances, etc., it is fair to call upon the cinema stuff for some sort of compensation or at least apology. if you, however, sit through the movie that you have paid for, you have gotten what you paid for! it's as simple as that. to ask for a refund in this case is ludicrous. go bitch to the production company that they wasted 1 h 46 minutes of your life.

reply

It is perfectly ok to ask for a refund. Just because you do not think so, does not mean it is not ok to ask for a refund. You are not the person in charge! Do not get me started as I got a refund for this movie.

reply

and how exactly are YOU right and is the person you are replying to wrong? .......your truth is the good truth and his is a bad one or something? sounds crazy to me.

reply

Who are you to say it's perfectly ok? I say you're a piece of crap if you sit through the whole thing then ask for a refund. No one makes you a guarantee that you are going to like a film when you walk in the door. You pay the theater for presenting it to you, not for the opinion you end up having of it.
If the picture is blurry, the sound is off, or the projector goes out, then you have a beef with the theater and can ask for a refund. Otherwise go whine to film makers for, God forbid, ever considering making a film you may not enjoy.
If this is soemthing you can't accept, then you should wait and rent it for $1 from Red Box then see if they'll give your buck back if you don't like it.
Hey come to think of it, I bought this book last year and it was very slow, uniteresting, and poorly written. But I slogged through it in bits and pieces and I finally finished it. Unfortunately the last 200 pages didn't get any better than the first 500 were, like I foolishly believed it would because I'm just an eternal optimist, not an idiot. I'm heading over to Barnes and Noble right now to get my refund. I'm not sure how they would ever expect me to know I'd not like it and want my money back before I finished it.

reply

Okay Karen.

reply

You responded to a four year old old post to make a Karen joke? Brilliant.

reply

Thx

reply

The difference is the movie theater doesn't care about the money generated from the movie. A fraction of it is theirs, so why bother fighting for it? They just want people in there buying overpriced concessions. If they have to refund a ticket for someone who ate a tub of popcorn and two drinks, the theater still wins.

reply

Interesting, hadn't thought about that. Guess demanding a refund is a-ok afterall. 

reply

Even if you found a human finger inside?

reply

That's an irrational argument; people have no and should not expect any guarantee that *any* film that they choose to go see will grant them any satisfaction whatever. The entire idea is quite ridiculous. It's akin to someone ordering an expensive entree in a restaurant, leisurely eating the entire meal down to the very smallest morsel, and then expecting not to pay because they just didn't feel like they "connected with the meal". See how dumb of a concept you're putting forth now? Good. Smarten up.

reply

They have film critics who review films....instead of blaming the movie theater, they could have read the reviews.

reply

Yeah, no. You pay to see the movie. There is no guarantee that you will like the movie. If all it took to get a refund was not liking a movie I would have gotten a few refunds in my life. So unless there was something wrong with the presentation of the film, like it going out of focus throughout or the sound not being synced properly (issues which I am not sure are even possible nowadays), you don't deserve a refund, especially if you watched the whole thing.

reply

LMFAO!!! Exactly!

If life gives you MELONS, then you probably have DYSLEXIA.

reply

If the same guys was doing that every week, you would be right.

In this situation, people are asking a refund for a particular film, so the problem is the film not the viewers.

I wanted to get a refund myself but it was the late viewing and the ticket booth was shut.

We should always get refunds when a movie is so disapointing compared to the hype and advertisement, not only as a principle for false advertising but also because this way movie theaters would try to have better films that are not scamming viewers.

You talk of pirates, but paying for a *beep* movie is exactly what makes people want to pirate them instead.

Also, with your attitude, it is clear you never operated a commerce and if you did, you would fail spectacularly.

reply

I worked at a couple theaters as some of my first jobs... loved it. The thing is is that theaters don't really make money on ticket sales, they make it on concessions. So if a movie isn't being received very well or a person seems reasonable when they ask for a refund then it just tends not to be worth it to fight them over it just so that random movie studios can make more money off of ticket sales.

The model that theaters and movie studios have with their different revenue streams pretty much encourages theaters to just not be very invested in customers spending money on the tickets themselves.

And my "rule of thumb" tended to be that if a person had bought concessions then they could even be a bit of a pain in the tuckus with me (which was usually the only time I might care enough to make things a bit more difficult for them) and I'd probably give them a "refund ticket" and let them come back in at some other time. Heck, there were a couple times where I was talking about movies with customers and let them watch a movie I was recommending without having to pay for another ticket under the conditions that they spend on concessions again for it. Wasn't even a manager at that time and would just bring them up to the manager and ask them if "my new friends" spent some more on concessions if they couldn't pop in to whatever movie it was... and they'd say "sure" and then tell me "good job" after they're gone. Would act like they were getting a favor and everyone would be happy and even got some tips that way. Movie studio loses, of course... but, again, that's sorta the problem with the business model that studios and theaters are both working with.

But yeah, if we had a particular movie that people tended to want refunds for then we just pretty much always gave the refund - it was just easier than dealing with it and a dissatisfied customer possibly even calling corporate or something.

reply

It's because the theater already made its money on the concessions, not the tickets. It's like those infomercials that charge so much for "processing" they can refund the purchase price and still make a profit.

reply

Best message ever. No, not literally stabbed them, well....yes, stab them. People are so enamored with their own perceived entitlement it is pathetic. You are not guarantee to like a movie, or it's style. People complain about everything. Grow up, folks.

No no no! The first order of business is REPEAT business. So you refund them the $8-$20 for tickets (costing you nothing) in hopes they RETURN and buy more $7 soda.

Enjoy these words, for one day they'll be gone... All of them.

reply

We walked out when Channing started to sing. I was just so glad we didn't pay for the premium couch seating.. I have never walked out of a movie before..

reply

That was probably the most enjoyable and endearing part of the movie for me. Why do you hate fun?

reply

@onesunnykiss: I have walked out of plenty of movies. I walked out of Winter's Bone (Jlaw), I walked out of the first Mockingjay (Jlaw), Inception, and several others I can't name.
Don't feel bad.

reply

Loved the film. Anyone who walked out is admitting their bad taste in movies and lack of sense of dark humor

reply

I really like Burn After Reading. Do you think I'll enjoy this one?

reply

Yes you will

reply

Absolutely

Goat at Ruthless Reviews

reply

It's a standard Coen Bros. comedy. People have liked them before, I have no reason why people are suddenly whining about this one.

reply

I would say this one is "quirkier" and even less straightforward than Burn After Reading. As for Coen Brothers films, it reminded me more of Barton Fink and The Big Lebowski.

There were elements of it that reminded me of Ed Wood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and The Player as well, although I think those films are superior.

reply

Xanderpanda; lol I don't hate fun.
Cravencarp; you must be the taste expert. Nice to meet you!

I know it's redundant but I still want to say it: everyone has their idea of fun/taste. I just couldn't like this movie.

reply

Why would you walk out there? That was a really fun scene and the dancing was dang amazing.

reply

What? Why the hell are they getting a refund? Are you stupid? Does that mean I can ask for my money back every time I don't enjoy a movie? Can I go and watch any movie, and just pretend it was terrible afterwards and they'll give me my money back? Obviously not. There's no such thing as an objectively bad movie. They paid to see a movie and they saw one. End of story. You're either stupid or you're lying.
If the theater screwed up the showing by mistake (damaged projector, for example), then okay, it's the theater's fault. But other than that, it's those people's problem.

reply

I'm sure there's a very small minority of people who would either feel they are entitled to a refund because they hated a movie, or would even feel comfortable asking for one. So I guess in that rare case you want to keep the customer happy. At least as happy as someone that miserable can possibly be. It's a movie theater so it's not like they're physically leaving with something. They just took up a seat that probably wouldn't have been filled anyway.

reply

I wish one could do that with live shows too.

reply

I've never heard of cinemas giving a refund to someone who didn't like the film. Is that the policy of this chain, or just your theater, or just this one manager?

I can think of plenty of movies I sat through where I would have asked for my money back had I known this is a real policy.

---------------------------------------
Shut your mouth when you talk to me!

reply

Actually guys...lots of theaters do it. You're all just reasonable, good people who aren't idiotic enough to complain about it.

My own mother even managed to get a refund for The Fountain so we can see Casino Royale instead

reply

But only if you do it w/in the first hour of the screening.

reply

There are some places that if you leave within 30 minutes or so of the movie starting you can get your money back no questions asked. However what this usually comes down to if you stay longer is how much of a pain in the ass you can be.

Movie theaters have razor thin profits on the movies themselves. They rent the movies from the studios and the cost of admission barely covers it. Where they make their money is the concessions which is why they state that you can't bring in outside food or drink. In bringing in your own pop or bag of chips you're effectively stealing from them.

So a manager is more likely to give you your money back if you complain loudly but also purchased some of the overpriced stuff at the concession stand.

reply

It's not really bad. There's no plot but I think the Coen's are just having fun and paying homage to 50's films. I knew it would get mixed reviews because it's not them being typically great but it's enjoyable if you like their sense of humor.

And if you guys are interested, have a review of this movie here- https://youtu.be/b_oN9oM087I

Trying to go for an informative, and hopefully something people think is funny, youtube channel so hope you guys like. Thanks.

reply

I think everyone who thinks a movie sucks should get their money back, no matter how much of the movie the endured before finally giving up.

Hollywood has been making almost nothing but crap for a few years now. If a movie doesn't do well they blame uncontrollable variables like, bad weather, a bad date to release, too much competition from one tent pole movie, etc. Instead of just accepting the fact that people are tired of watching crap.

But if people go to the movie and then demand their money back then the studio has no choice but to accept the fact that the movie sucked, that it was their fault for releasing it, and they should try harder next time.

The theater owners will suffer also, though no more than if no one ever came to the movie in the first place. But theater owners only get to keep half the ticket price anyway. The bulk of their profit comes from the concession stand. And after they are forced to refund ticket sales for one too many movies they will get wise and stop booking those films.

Case in point: How many Johnny Depp movies have to flop before someone decides that he can't make good movies anymore? How about Adam Sandler?

"Whatever happened to Fay Wray?"

A refund, really? I can't follow people sometimes...

So what, you're going to ask a refund to the front desk if you go watch a football game and your team lost? Come on, that's not how it works.

You took the decision to go see a movie that night. I'm sorry but deal with it if it's not your cup of tea. No need to drag the theater's owner into this. He's just screening movies, that's his job.

How much was your ticket? Are you really that cheap or it was by principle? I'm just curious.

reply

Honestly, I don't believe these posts when I read them. People talk all kinds of nonsense on IMDB. You would think that everyone was lining up for refunds (and getting them) based on what you read here and yet, after a whole lifetime of moviegoing, I have yet to ever witness anyone ever approaching a manager or box office employee asking for a refund on a movie they didn't like....ever.

But, like you said, a movie is a crap shoot. You pay whether you like it or not. Barring some special technical difficulty (such as the projector dying in the middle of a show), nobody is entitled to...or should ask for....a refund.
