Rather than respond to a post and have my point get bogged down in the responses, I'm putting it here. I'm so sick and tired of people from other countries claiming that Americans are too lazy to read subtitles, illiterate, etc. I watch foreign movies all the time and they all have subtitles. I actually hate dubbed movies or remakes. So get over it! Not ALL Americans are the same. Get a brain!

shareI can also attest to this. I believe that Hollywood has been in a bit of a creative drought recently for quite some time. Sure, the U.S. puts out a good movie here and there (Looper, Inception, The Cabin in the Woods, etc.) but for the most part, everything is a little dull these days in Hollywood. I generally seek out foreign films these days.
I despise dubbing with a passion. I held off on watching High Tension for months because I couldn't find a subtitled copy nearby. All I could find were dubbed versions.
Also, some of my favorite films are foreign films: La Vie en Rose, Amelie, Pan's Labyrinth, High Tension, and The Orphanage are all great!

I'm not american and I'm not saying that all americans prefer dubbed over subtitles but I do think the marjority do.
I think a lot of americans have these odd views on 'foreign' movies.
I remember watching Friends and Ross wants to see a French movie or something and Rachel is all like 'I don't want to read subtitles."
And in Futurama Amy remarks that all foreign films are pretentious.
I'm not just building my statement on TV-series but the fact that so many movies gets americanized speaks for itself.
I'm danish and a paticuely moment I remember is the danish movie Nightwatch. I won't spoil too much but in the original ending it ends with the protagonist going back to his old ways even though it got him into a lot of trouble. But in the american version it has the 'I'm a better person now'-ending, which just pisses me off.
I won't generalize, but I do think a lot of americans won't read subtitles.

I'm English-American, so doubly-bad to some people who dislike both countries. I don't mind subtitles. I'm looking forward to The Returned/Les Revenants, coming back tomorrow!

Exception are animes.
Reading subs is distracting. I can't concentrate as much on the movie as I want to because of reading subs. It's the same with animes but there I can't bear any other language than Japanese.
However, I often watch movies that I know well in original audio with subs. Sometimes I even check other dubs like Spanish ^^
Generally speaking I also don't want to read subs.
Oh, and I watched this one in German. No subs. I wouldn't have bothered if it was with subs.
