Why Tokyo Drift is underrated

1) a street racing story that introduced a new ( to me) twist on the old concept, drifting.
( because the original premise was based on street racing, and has somehow morphed into international espionage)

2) a fish out of water story that is respectful towards Japanese culture and showcases some spectacular parts of urban Tokyo.

3) A romance that doesn't feel forced, and that makes sense as helping to drive the plot.

Bonus: Sonny Chiba as a Yakuza boss ( with Tak Kubota as a bodyguard)

This is a very under-rated film.

It's the best out of all the F&F films. By a wide margin.

It is more of a standalone film, has no connection to previous films, except the final cameo.

So the fans of the original movies were watching the wrong film. I think that was the problem.

They subsequently built connections to the franchise, mostly because Justin Lin was also the director of the next 3 films, but that did not help it at the time.

By the way, there were a bunch of deleted scenes (clips available on youtube) that really added to the story that should've been kept in. Would've made the movie a lot longer, but it also would've made it better.
