What's so great about anorectic nude girls? There's absolutely nothing great about this movie. He's a shallow dirty bastard and the whole movie is just another pathetic excuse to show unrealistically skinny NAKED girls.
A useless, pointless, meaningless movie. It's weird how the sickest movies get the most praise and win the most awards.
I know this is over two years late, but I thought I'd point out that "anorectic" is interchangeable with "anorexic". Google isn't that hard to use, neither is Wikipedia. /pedantry
Anerectic is a drug used to suppress appetite. Anorexic is Anorexia Nervosa. Anorectic is also the noun for someone who has anorexia. He used it as an adjective so you are wrong.
Obviously you didn't watch the film/ There is only a couple of skinny naked girls in the film (the one on the cover and the tall one with the dark ponytail.) The rest of the naked girls are very voluptuous and curvy.
Stop being a jealous, self loathing dumb @$$.
"It's easy to be miserable. Being happy is tougher - and cooler." Thom Yorke
Anorexic or curvy doesnt matter. What matters is nudity must be with purpose, in fact any scene in a movie should be worth something. should put weight on the whole structure of the movie. this is especially for a nude scene.
it's either i don't get the whole point of his obsession with female nudity/beauty because of its poor portrayal of the obsession or the nudity is seriously without purpose. Either way, they are bad.
i can see why girls have a hard time understanding that kind of appreciation of beauty though, even if the girls were normal looking, as opposed to models.
i loved the movie though, and although there probably are some of the female critics here who posess enough intelligence and self-confidence to see that this movie is not about the glorification of anorectic models, i think most of you are. and ironicly, that makes you uglier than you probably are.
I think you'll find that an anorectic, is actually an appetite suppressant (a drug of some sort), so yes while it is a word, it is a word not fitting to what the poster actually meant.
I don't think all of the girls were anorexic but they did all seem to have near perfect physiques and I think that really hurt the films integrity. It's like, yeah it's so hard to see beauty in a beautiful woman with a perfect body..you're such an artist. If he had seen beauty in less perfect women that would be more profound imo. And this made his work not very special as well. Wow kid, you're so creative you draw beautiful naked women. And you really see them! Why don't you go hang out with Jack from Titanic because you're totally stealing his character.
""""If he had seen beauty in less perfect women that would be more profound imo.""""
One word: Sharon.
She looks tired, neglectfully wears her work uniform with awkward makeup and yet, she has such an effect on him he has actually trouble stopping time in her presence (locker scene). She's the least glamorous girl in the entire movie and the only one that actually interests him (besides his former crush).
That was the POINT of the film.
Secondly, I'm not sure how one's art determines how "profound" you are. Hey, does that mean a guy who paints trees is more profound? How about someone who simply collects stamps? Does he have a right to be profound or does this single pursuit defines his entire personality for you?
"""And this made his work not very special as well."""
The movie isn't about his art. The movie isn't about how good of an artist he is either.
He strikes me as a typical young male, who mixes standard fantasies with in-depth feelings. Most people do that.
The director wasn't going for some sort of Ghandi/Jesus archetype with the character. He's an emotionally fragile and romantic character, but still very much a product of his environment. A teen or young adult in the 20th century is usually going to notice just the kind of women he was noticing in the store.
I like that the character is human like that. And where you see lack of depth, I see a more credible character instead of some sort of weird alien that is obsessed with inner beauty only.
Wait- what is the point again? That he falls for a girl which you feel personally is less attractive than everyone else? How is that a point? (Not trying to be rude, I'm seriously wondering).
Additionally, if we're not supposed to view him as a serious artist, rather just a boy who's good at sketching, then I have no problem with his superficiality. But in regards to the need to use beautiful women in art, two words: Mona Lisa.

I know you're not being rude, don't worry. I feel it is an interesting subject and enjoy other point of views :)
To answer your question, the point is that he does find beauty elsewhere than in naked, curvy women who look like models. Instead of sexualizing Sharon, he seems genuinely interested in her person. I like that Sharon is an ordinary girl, with ordinary goals in life instead of some super sexy babe with a through the roof IQ, career and so on...

I don't think there is a need to use any particular kind of subject in art.
I do think it is not unusual for many to be attracted by certain things in particular, though.
Does this make a person superficial as a whole? That is another debate but I myself prefer to think that it is not the case :)
Its funny when women must term 'normal, thin, pretty women' as having "anorexia". Its healthy to be thin. Its actually how we SHOULD be. I know you look around and see 80% of the population as being fat, well, thats not normal. Its called being overfed and lazy. None of the women in this movie are underweight or sick looking. I just dont know why women hate on other women who take care of their appearance.
first I am fat and I like the movie. I didn't really see any anorexic girls maybe one but that didn't bother me what did is, thought I understand that a thin woman is better to look at,that there is only girls that could be supermodels so when Ben says "I love woman curves" and that "there is beauty in all" he should have specify that there was still no place for not pretty and/or fat girls. I would like it just a little bit better if there were 1 or 2 ordinary/fat/not pretty girls and that he wouldn't have undressed them to draw them. Cause it is a bit hypocrit but as I said overall a good movie that I enjoyed
Wow, in no way whatsoever were any single one of those young women unhealthily thin. I can't imagine how anyone could think they were even remotely skinny (they were the definiton of normal in terms of weight, though perhaps not bust size).
You must either be jealous or deluded about what a healthy size. Or being a very strange kind of ironic?
