Cate's German?
Was that dubbed??? Her German is pretty freaking good if not.
shareFor someone whow isn't a native speaker her german is good. For someone who is supposed to play a native german it is terrible. We have shown this film at our university's cinema, not dubbed, but with subtitles and people were complainig that the german parts hadn't subtitles as well. It's not only the accent but the whole construction of senctences, it really sounds unnatural, even the text of the german actor sometimes sounded just wrong. They could at least have consulted a native speaker to take a look at the script.
shareOT again. Firstly, I'm Australian and studied German and French - Go French - German is so so much harder. Secondly, I didn't notice the language (swearing) until I came to this forum. We swear so much here, it isn't an issue. I'm sure the Australian and Brit introduced the Yanks to foul language and I KNOW they used it.
I bumped into a bunch of lost German tourists. I gesticulated "Red, Yellow, Green" as in traffic lights - I eventually managed to head them in the right direction. They were so gracious, they actually tried to give me money. If German is hard for us - English speaking Germans are amazing!
I lead them to their destination and they were the most gracious and polite tourists I have ever come across. Of course, I didn't accept any money, but they were the most polite tourists I have come across and I live in a tourist town in Queensland.
Hats off to the German ppl - I was blown away.
Yeah, maybe Cate did a bad job or a good one, but as an Australian, I can understand how irritating it is to see actors (English speaking ones) do an Australian accent. They sound like spastic cockney ppl. I can understand the frustration of the German's at having their language butchered.
Cate is Australian but it is yet another example of US navel gazing!
Don't they understand that their nation is doing exactly the same thing to the world and the majority of the population think it's a patriotic thing to conquer and kill? Look what they did to the Dixy Chicks when they came out and said "this is wrong"! Just as brainwashed as the Germans of the 1930's and they really had a axe to grind.
I loved this film, and especially Cate's role of Lena -I kept thinking of Greta Garbo -that low beautiful voice.
shareI was thinking not of Garbo, but of Marlene Dietrich in a somewhat similar role in "A Foreign Affair", also set in postwar Berlin. I'm quite sure Soderbergh was familiar with that film when he put this one together, and directed Blanchett accordingly.
shareIn re: someone's remark that Meryl Steep learned Polish for Sophie's Choice. I don't know from Polish, but her Australian accent for "Cry in the Dark" was horrible according to the apparently Australian woman who sat behind me in the theater complaining loudly that she couldn't undertand a word of what poor Miss Meryl was saying. Her American seatmate kept trying to give translations. It detracted from the serious nature of the dingo baby thing but was hilarious just the same.
