I think this movie is much better than 1973 version.
I have seen it before the 1973 version and was surprised by low ratings. But I have given it a 9.
So I decided to watch the older version too only to get disappointed. I could not rate it more than 5.
The plot is much better here with the female dominance on the island theme and a non arrogant main character.
They ended up being two different kind of movies, and they made the 2006 version's theme "men vs. women" (or "Nic Cage vs. evil pagan feminazis"). They're different enough to me that I can separate them in my mind and not feel like one ruins the other.
I love the original. It's creepy and very well made.
This version is HILARIOUS though. What it lacks in quality is made up for by the Cage.
I have to give you credit for watching the original and making your own comparisons.

I rated the 1973 version 9/10 too. This one has to be 4/10.
