Dario Argento did not write this story,, it is based off of a comic entitled "Creepy" which appeared in the comic Creepers (I believe) Anyway Argento, Mick Garris and Steven Weber collaborated to do a remake/retelling of that short story.
Argento saying Jenifer was an Alien was most likely his interpretation of what she was. Since Argento was only the director and not the person who wrote the original comic,, or the person who wrote this episode OR wrote the tele play, I think we can say that Jenifer being referred to as an Alien is just his interpretation and not a Fact.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and since in the movie there is never a scene of Jenifer's origin IE. (spaceship,,crawling out of a Demon Pit,,Escape from a mental Asylum scene) The viewer can really come to their own conclusion as to exactly what she was.
I personally feel she was a Succubus, and here is why. This is a cut and paste from Wikipedia search for succubus.
In folklore traced back to medieval legend, a succubus is a female demon or supernatural entity that appears in dreams, who takes the form of a human woman in order to seduce men, usually through sexual intercourse. The male counterpart is the incubus. Religious traditions hold that repeated intercourse with a succubus may result in the deterioration of health or even death.
In modern fictional representations, a succubus may or may not appear in dreams and is often depicted as a highly attractive seductress or enchantress; whereas, in the past, succubi were generally depicted as frightening and demonic.
OK so,, IN the Episode Jenifer,, we kinda see a combination of old and new Succubus incarnations.
Jenifer does seem to influence his dreams,,both sleep dreams and day dreams.
She certainly seduces men.
and where in medieval times she appeared as a beautiful woman and in modern times a frightening and demonic looking entity,, in this episode we see a combination of those too,, beautiful body with a demonic looking face.
In wiki's folklore it says REPEATED intercourse with a Succubus may result in deterioration of one's health or even death.
When Frank shoots the guy who is going to kill Jenifer at the start of the episode if you look at his face he looks pale as though he has been ill or has had his life forced drained,, When Frank gets shot at the end and he reaches up and says "Jenifer!" We see that same pale withered look on his face.
As Frank and the guy at the start of the movie have both been shot in the chest,,the pale face may just be shock and blood loss,,but I believe it was more of a way of showing that they've had been drained by having spent so much time around Jenifer and/or have been having a lot of sex with her.
Anyway this is just my two cents on why I think that Jenifer is a Succubus.
I see No evidence of her being an Alien, A mental patient would not really explain her face/black eyes/Fangs... A Succubus is a type of Demon so Succubus/Demon seems to me to be the most logical explanation.
