Daughter from The Screwfly Solution

Who else thinks that the daughter from this movie was extremely stupid!!!
I mean if I saw what was going on around and then came in contact with the people who were doing it, I would try to not come in contact with any of that group again! Also, Why the crap would you shake your bum at construction workers! Stupid girl!

BTW, I am not saying this is a bad one, I liked this one. I just thought the character was obnoxious, which is probably what they were going for...

She was pretty much your average, stupid-ass shallow teenage girl. Not to say we're all like this, but she was clearly so self-absorbed than she couldn't really see the risks and dangers all around her and sided with one parent over the other (ie. running from her mom to her dad, despite it being a huge mistake) as most teenagers do.

reply

She's like the global warming deniers that are alluded to in some of the early scenes. The world as she knows it is coming to an end, and she just can't wrap her mind around it, mainly because she's reluctant to do what she needs to do to adapt to such a mind-boggling change, as are all of the other characters.

But also, she just doesn't want it to be true. She wants everything to stay the same, and it's hard to blame her for feeling that way. But it won't.

I'm a big fan of the original (Nebula Award-winning) novelette by Raccoona Sheldon (the pen name she used for the publication of this story, instead of her more usual "James Tiptree Jr.",) and I'd have to say, I sure do wish this story had gotten a better production. Hideously bad acting in some scenes, for which I don't blame the actors, but the director. Some of the alterations in the screenplay from the novelette were inspired, I'll give them credit for that, but most were a bad idea.

Yes, and she "sided with" the one who was fondling her ass and physically attacking her mother. This kid sucked.

reply

That puzzled me too, jeans are made of a thicker fabric but you can totally feel someone trying to cop a feel. So it would make no sense that she wouldn't react to it unless she had a hard core electra complex.

reply

Her lack of reaction had me for a bit thinking the ass fondling was in Amy's mind. It really didn't make any sense for the teen girl, stupid as she was being, to not react at all to that.

I was hoping she would be killed. I hated her obnoxiousness and thought she deserved to be killed. Stupid girl.

Aw, I don't think she deserved to die :( Especially in the tragic way she did. She was just naive and immature, which made her blind to the severity of the situation (and I don't think her mother really explained it to her as well as she should have)

i completely agree. i don't think her mother adequately explained the severity of the situation or that her husband had effectively been poisoned.

reply

I agree that the character was obnoxious. Her behavior struck me as extremely stupid, precisely in the most critical occasions. Not sure that this was intended, either -I just read in an interview with the director that they were intending to make the two main female characters especially likeable, characters with whom the public would easily empathize.

Guess it didn't turn out that well!

reply

Yeah, Amy was stupid and did many risky things. Which is why she died.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)

I don't think her parents informed her enough and if they did she was probably in denial. Wish they had shown how she died, maybe reality struck when she saw her dad and she fought but wasn't strong enough....
Did you notice the scene in the hospital where the nursery room is shown and the "cribs" are bloody??

reply

Even if she was uninformed about the situation, a young girl shaky her bum at construction workers is crass, crude, stupid, & slutty.

LOL I came here specifically to see if anyone else already mentioned this.

I agree with previous posters that some of it was due to immaturity and some of it was due to her not being informed of the entire situation. But come on, she had to be at least semi-aware of the situation. It was a global phenomenon! And she saw it happen firsthand when the dude ran over the girls!

One of the most annoying parts to me was the butt shaking to the construction workers (my girlfriend is accosted by New York guys on the street all the time and I'm afraid it's girls like Amy that sometimes encourage this behavior). Running to her dad when he returned to the cabin even after the mother told her to stop was pretty ridiculous too. And I guess she didn't feel her own father grabbing her behind and then throwing her and getting violently angry at her mother.

I'll let the carjacking slide. She probably just wanted to make sure her dad wasn't dead. As tragic as a daughter dying is, I was a little relieved to see her character removed.

That episode was so hilarious, it seems like they were intentionally trying to make it funny. Our whole family was watching when that show came on, and everyone just could not contain their laughter. It was just such a silly story line, and the yes, the daughter was a bit naive.
