53M Opening Weekend. Lowest for a DCEU film. Ouch!

Ha, ha, ha... yes, another phenomenal hit for DC, of course... Ha, ha, ha.

Now lets start having fun with the collection of excuses we are going to see from now on... Pathetic...

reply

$53.5M + $3.5M = $57M

Decent opening for a unknown DC character that is actually Captain Marvel.

reply

Whatever you wanna name Marvel's character whether its Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers, Binary or Warbird, at least the MCU got the character correct.

This was good for a kids movie adaptation of something sorta resembling the character. But this was no Captain Marvel.

But who knows. Maybe we'll get a real DC Captain Marvel in Shazam 2.

reply

I agree with you, however they say the same with Man of Steel Superman and we never got to see it. There was no MOS 2 and in the other movies we only got the same brooding dark and emo Superman, except for the last minutes of Justice League and there post credit scene

reply

That's what happens to DC unknown characters. They are allowed to use the excuse... Ha, ha, ha...

reply

I can excuse Man of Steel's Superman because there are times when Superman is brooding in the comics. Its just not all the time like in the movies. The movies left out his stoicism but at least they didn't change his abilities.

These anti-SJWs are just looking for a reason to criticize Brie Larson not realizing that calling the Shazam! film the real Captain Marvel from the comics is exposing them as hacks who never even read the comics.

Is somebody going to talk about Monday drop?

Someone?

Here we have a movie that is more kiddie than anything the MCU had done. But the same butthurt DC fanboys who were crapping on Marvel for their kiddie content are now very happy with this movie directed to even younger audience than the kiddie MCU movies, wow! Calling the hypocrites...

reply

Alright... now this right here couldn’t be any more true.

Even though the anti-MCU - DCarmy - trolls have obviously never been the kind to own up to anything, the stunning hypocrisy they’ve demonstrated when it comes to the DCEU’s three most successful movies (far from bleak and super serious movies) is astounding. With Shazam, that hypocrisy rings more true now than ever and it’s something that should always be brought up.

Now as one would expect, these hypocrites are either pretending that their old “kiddies” criticisms and distaste for superheroes films that dared to be lighthearted and even poke fun at themselves never existed (is there coincidentally that many cases of amnesia? Nice try!) or they’re simply making excuse after excuse. The fools.

In view of the reviews (90% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes - up there with some of the most highly-rated Marvel films), the family-friendly tone and appeal, and the good word-of-mouth (as far as I can tell), I'm surprised this isn't doing better at the box-office.

The audience I saw the film with tonight seemed to enjoy it. There were plenty of big laughs and the response, particularly from younger audience members, was positive.

yep....With this completely Average(close to below average) hold of 57%.

Its official..Shazam is not in any way having The "Long,Leggy run" Queen Predicted

also Worth Noting...With This drop, Shazam now has no CHANCE of even matching AM'1s total domestic or World Wide gross

of course this is important, because you guessed it , Queen guaranteed Shazam would out gross BOTH AM2 and AM 1

[–] QueenFanUSA (1579) 9 days ago

Hahaha...bill...this is going to debut closer to 100 million. Take that to the bank. It's domestic box office will end up much bigger than either of the Ant Man films.

^^^^^

Its safe to say...Shazam just isnt having The "Impact" queen expected.....and Queen "Certainly isnt having "Fun" watching Shazams box office....

now to stop Abusing queen for a second...

I'm actually surprised Shazam is coming up this short at the box office...

I expected both its opening Weekend and this weekend to be much higher...

but for whatever reason its becoming very clear, The movie just doesnt have the Great WOM people were expecting or suggesting...

while its clear Critics loved it, These box office results are proof, for whatever reason, Shazam is getting Literally ZERO Bump from great WOM...

There is no repeat viewing factor, People arent recommending it....Shazam is just going to come and go and be quickly forgotten, Unfortunately sandwhiched between 2 MCU films that make 1 Billion + and 2 Billion +

Its entirely possible, In 3 weeks, Captain Marvel is going to be playing in more theaters and making more box office in Shazam's 5th weekend than Shazam

I'm not sure exactly what went wrong here...but something went pretty wrong...Despite being a Great movie, Great reviews and coming off a Huge Success in Aquaman...Shazam was pretty much DOA.

Obviously Shazam isnt an A List Property, but when you consider the success Marvel Studios has had with LESS KNOWN debuting Properties like GOTG,Ant-Man, Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange....Its quite Shocking
DC couldnt have more success than this.

Ultimately the more I look at it....It comes down to A Truly AWFUL release date....

again Putting Shazam Between 2 MCU films as important as Captain Marvel and Endgame...has ultimately lead to Shazam Literally Being forgotten...

and Next, I think A complete Lack Of any of Kind Of Big Star to help sell the movie has resulted in Shazam just not feeling IMPORTANT to audiences...

and lastly, again for whatever reason, Its clear Audiences seem to just Like the movie or think Its decent, Instead of Loving It like critics...

Overall...Shazam is going to make a profit, although that profit is getting smaller and smaller now...Shazam now looks like it has no shot at hitting 500 Million WW now...

I think Shazam is going to finishing around 400 to 435 Million.....that will net WB between 50 to 75 Million In Profit....

I now dont see WB going forward with a sequel without Another Major DC characters in the sequel to BOOST box office....I expect The Rocks Black Adam to now be forced into the sequel now

Shazam Himself with Zack in The Lead in proving not to be a draw....WB is going to want/require Something that will give them confidence A potential sequel could be more successful than Shazam...and Bringing in The biggest Action Star in Hollywood in The Rock would do that...

biggest takeaway.....This really shows the difference between Marvel Studios and WB.

WB is about to come up almost 100 Million dollar Short of The MCU weakest Film and Movie in AM1....and around 300 Million short of Similar Debuting characters films like GOTG and Doctor Strange....and lol of course over 600 and 800 Million short of similar debuting Characters films like BP and CM...

21 for 21 Buys you something....Trust and a GIANT Audience who will faithfully come see 1st time debuting characters...

WB is learning 4 out 7 universally hated films, Just doesnt get Much trust or faith ....

Great analisys as always. There are several things to discuss over the days in there. However, the first thing that draws my attention is the analysis in repeated business. Because there are too many people, butthurt DC fans ans trolls begging to the gods that Lion King beats Endgame in the box office, this becomes relevant. While there is a chance of that happening, using your analysis, my answer for that is this will not be possible. And without getting into much details, my reasoning is this: kids movies do not draw big repeated business. Yes, a kids movie can make a billion (Frozen, Toy Story), but is the repeated business what takes them beyond (Infinity War, The Force Awakens). Maybe that's part of Shazam's problem... And why I believe LK wil not beat A:E

I think thats the most important factor here, its not that Shazam is a bad movie, it was simply released at entirely the wrong time.

Its a superhero movie sandwiched between two other superhero movies, one of them happens to be essential viewing, the other one was interpreted by some as essential viewing, because they'd watched the other 20 movies, so why the hell not?

Now my income is quite disposable, but the key demographics for these movies, I suspect their income is less disposable than mine, and the choice for them is simple..... enough money to see at least two of those movies over a month and a half period, which is why Captain Marvel got the nod because its linked to Avengers: Endgame.

I called it some days ago when it was clear that China were "meh" about Shazam that it wasn't going to do the numbers posted by some and that even $500million was going to be a feat in itself.

The movie will make money, but Captain Marvel, Avengers, even Dumbo, Hellboy, Little, Pet Sematary and to a much lesser extent, Missing Link, are all taking audience from Shazam.

I think the main problem is that WOM has gotten out for the movie, and parents with younger children have spoken that its not quite what they want their little kids seeing as some of the scenes in the movie are not really geared for a young audience.

Warner Bros should have released this once Endgame started winding down.

reply

Yes, another good analysis. I think it is a combination of factors. I will keep getting your ideas and ponder them.

When even well-regarded superhero films start failing at the BO, I think we need to think seriously about the impact Netflix, Amazon, and other home entertainment formats are having on cinema. We certainly shouldn't be allowing these companies to compete in film awards ceremonies without investing more in big screen entertainment.

A 65% drop in international box office this weekend. Who was talking about legs here?

reply

Every weekend since its release, the movie got a estimate number for box office gross and then it underperfom going down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down,... It has happened every single weekend, the movie cannot stand to its estimates, poor performance...
