Does anyone else find these movies confusing as hell?

So many characters, so many names, lots of back-and-forths. When someone said that so-and-so was behind the whole thing or whatever, I didn't know who the hell they were talking about. The next time they make a movie like this, they should have a cast card with pictures. That way, the next time you hear someone say something like, "It was Langstrom," people won't be thinking, "Who the hell is Langstrom?!"

Same thing happens to me, for a lot of movies, really. Most of the time, I have to re-watch a couple times to catch everything.

reply

No, but I did with the Bond films. I don't think there was a single one where I didn't need to look at a plot summary to catch up.

*Looks up Syriana.*
A thriller with Matt Damon in it. Such a movie is probably required by law (or at least Damon's contract) to be confusing. If I ever see a thriller with Matt Damon that is not confusing, I'll be confused at how such a movie was made. In other words, there is no such thing as a thriller movie with Matt Damon that will not confuse in one way or another.

UPDATE: And yes, I was thinking of The Departed when I wrote this post.

Yes, I had a hard time understanding what is going on as well. It doesn't help that the story has been spread out among three movies over several years. The action sequences are incredible and that may be part of the problem. They simply blow you away which doesn't really allow for mental processing of the quieter moments where the plot is unfolding. The opposite of this is a movie where you understand perfectly well what is going on but the movie is really dragging.

Cliffhanger was an action movie that had incredible stunts as well, but was fairly easy to follow in terms of the story. I don't know if it is the writing or what that makes the plot of these movies so murky.

a lot of flicks are just purposely made to be confusing. You don't have to think that your intelligence is not up to par.

Example. The Prestige. If you haven't watched that two times then you haven't watched the entire movie.

reply

Agreed. You can watch those movies over and over and you pick up some new things every time.

It’s just so sad that the variety of the world should be used as a contentious issue.

*Sigh*

What? I'm compulsive!

The first time I saw them, as they came out, I was confused as hell. I watched them all again over the past week, and reading up on them online in between helped. Even then, I think the most confusing stuff was the logistics, like how Bourne gets from one place to another, or how he finds out about something. I think Bourne just benefits from a lot of serendipity, but a lot of movie heroes do.

If you want a confusing movie, try the old Bogart one, "The Big Sleep." Supposedly the filmmakers weren't sure what happened to a particular character, and they had to ask the author of the book, Raymond Chandler, who didn't know either.

You're sadistic! Do you have any idea how many movies are in my queue that I have to get out of the way just from reading this topic?!

"There is no escape, John!"

reply

They are confusing because they are so incredibly involved and highly intelligent. The more you watch them, the more you understand things. I always pick up new things each time I watch them. :)

The weird thing is these movies are nowhere near as confusing as the books. I had to force myself to read them, most books I just start reading and lose track of time.

"Why do you say this to me when you know I will kill you for it?"
