The article does mention the people like we see here who have a clear agenda to discredit anything the show does on political grounds; but the main takeaway for me was how Doctor Who fans have always been a little bit precious about the show. Before the whole 'woke' fracas it wasn't unusual to read lengthy tirades from fans who were butthurt about a new Doctor, a new companion, a particular monster they disliked...
It's like Whovians are the hardest of all fans to satisfy. Then again I think Star Wars fans may be giving us a run for our money these days.
As someone who is reasonably easily satisfied if I'm watching a mad alien travel through space and time in a police box having crazy adventures, I find the constant grumbling amusing, if a little boring at times.
There are definitely more important things to worry about.
Who accused you in this thread? You pretty much hate all Sci Fi after 2000: Star Wars preqs and seqs, Star Trek, any show or movie with female leads. Your hatred was well before Dr Woke!
The complains about Doctor Who are not the usual ones about the quality of the show. They're mostly about the constant political/pseudo-religious preaching.
The same the complains about modern Star Wars are completely different from the ones about the prequels. The prequels were flawed in many ways, but nobody felt Lucas was trying to use them to proselytize or to sell some political or pseudo-religious message. The prequels just weren't really good, but that was all.
When reading the top quote in the article "what has happened to doctor who" I thought it was going to be someone now but I suppose that is the point. People will always complain and what seems like a classic now isn't always to begin with.
Great point peter, I totally agree and have said before that history will be kind to s12.
I should probably reserve my opinion until the two part finale has aired, but from what I've seen so far this season is one of the best since the 2005 revival for me. Something had dulled with my love for the show around the Capaldi era. I still watched but I found the stories often bland and Capaldi never quite settled into the Doctor's skin like I hoped he would.
I dare say I was not alone, hence the radical changes they made for S11. I don't think it's much surprise that Jodie's first season was uneven, the show-runners gave themselves a massive task to introduce the world to the first female Doctor while somehow keeping things going like it was business as usual. What would have been a weak season for any other Doctor was suddenly a cataclysmic blight on television that represented everything that was wrong with modern society to some people. Hard to find your feet when you're being kicked from every direction, I guess.
Anyway, that is why I am so very proud of what Chibnall has done with season 12. The stories are exciting (ok, there was Orphan 55 and Praxeus, which I thought both had positive moments but ultimately were like waving a red flag at the haters), the development of the Doctor and the companions has been rich and satisfying, the nod to past seasons beautifully nostalgic, the effects and locations stunning, the guest actors top-notch, the surprise addition of The Master and the unknown Doctor thrilling, and most of all I can't wait to tune in each week. That's a feeling I thought might be lost for good.
I expect some people here to disagree with most of what I've written. Not that it matters, I have seen more attacks on Doctor Who in the last two years than ever before in my life, and yet I still feel this way.
As excited for the finale as I am, I will be genuinely sorry to see this season end.
I don't know if I've mentioned i run my own doctor who forum. Sorry if I've already brought it up as I know some people on here have an account with a different username. Its quiet but starting to slowly grow. Planning to do a rerun of new who with everyone once this series finishes.
