only 7.0 ????? come on...
the movie deserves better than this. i dont understand.....
shareIt's ok. The Thin Red Line's got 7.5.
What's wrong with these people??? I gave it a 10.
"How ya like me now?"

To me, it can only reach a 7 simply because there are no likable heros in this film. For a 9 or 10 their HAS to be some sympathy going on.....who are you going to be sympathetic towards in this movie, which main character?? Bale is a d ick, his buddy is a loser (grow TF up!)
Does a character have to be likeable for the viewer to have sympathy for them? I don't think they do. It's preferable, but to be honest, I tend to root for the underdogs anyway. You know, the ones we aren't supposed to like. The ones no one else in the movie likes. Not always, of course. For instance, I didn't root for Hannibal Lector. But when we're talking about ordinary human beings with flaws, I like them more, BECAUSE they are human and flawed. No, I've never been in Jim's place, and I wouldn't want to be. I do think it's tricky casting. A lesser actor could have easily played Jim as a one note psycho. Bale rocked it, and BALE made me love Jim.
sharei wish i had said it. bravo dude!
shareSympathy for a character is not what film is about. Perhaps you need a bit of education before forming an opinion.
shareI don't need to be able to sympathize with the main characters, but I do want the feeling of understanding them. Which I did get with this movie, I thought it was really good and gave it an 8.
Actually, I sympathized with both characters in their final scenes- with Bale when he asks his friend to shoot him, and with the friend when he comes home and sees his girlfriend moving out.
that was my exact reaction.. it was a great movie , i was thinking at 8 when I started to search it .. but ... there you go, I gave it an 9
shareGiving a 9 is rear for me but i gave it a 9. The movie was wonderful. Wish they did more character building.
shareI didn't like it, so I gave it a 4... I thought 7 was a little too high imo
shareDamn that's shame you aren't capable of enjoying it, probably much too deep for you.
shareNo, it's simplistic and a little inept. Tries too hard, David Ayer's scripts and directing are pretty lackluster imo. Even Training Day was silly imo, only good part is Denzel's acting. This movie was far from deep
shareI gave it a 10.
shareI agree all the way. Holy shyt...just finished watching this film and it is damn good. It's a nice mixture of Training Day-style action drama with the Carlito's Way lead-character-tragedy piece...
and probably the best I've seen Christian Bale act...he doesn't pull punches or leave his character behind at any point. Wow...
A what? A GRRRRRRRRAILLLL?
Its a superb movie, just like training day. Im sick of people saying training day isnt all that, seriously harsh times and training day are easily 2 of the best movies of the last 20 years. Whats silly about either of these movies? Both are pretty realistic, both have great acting, great tense moments, great comedy moments, great stories, great Cali feel, nice cinematography.
And yes harsh times is deep, its full of comments on American imperialism in Afghanistan and Latin America, racial problems, capitalism, mike loosing his job as its now outsourced to india, poverty in the US and Mexico, the role of women in modern society (too dominant or mistreated), the trauma that people in the military suffer and how its not really dealt with, the violence and guns that are part of urban life, crooked cops, the lacking border security, the innocence of Toussant, Mike, Marta against the corrupted Jim. The choice between being happy with Marta and children in Mexico against a backdrop of an idyllic lake but still wanting to go and murder columbian villagers/strangers for a shady agency. And also it has the adolescent buddy feel too. Even the politics and corruption of job interviews are taken into question.
How can you not like this movie? It also has a good soundtrack and some nice gun play. Does every movie have to be simplistic good guy, bad guy nice ending? I give this and training day 10/10.
I've seen this movie 3 times and now I'm watching the 4th on Bluray. It's awesome. Realistic, too.
